Rolando Park Community Council

Canyon Defense League-Rolando P.

Posted in: Rolando Park
In case you haven't heard; two organizations are forming to defend our canyon from becoming a low income housing development. For details, contact Eric Bowlby of the Sierra Club, and the Canyon Defense League of Rolando Park [cdlrolando@earthlink.net]

Here?’s two interesting pieces of information for all C.D.L. members to consider:

THE SAD DARNALL SCHOOL GROUNDS REDEVELOPMENT STORY

Some of our C.D.L. members met with Constance Mitchell, past president of the Darnall Community Council on Monday to gather information about what happened in Darnall when all those multi-story units were built on school property. Here?’s what she told them in a nutshell:

The land Darnall School sits on was donated by one Mr. Darnall with the agreement that the land be used for the school, and no other purpose. This was quite a few years ago.

The San Diego City School Board quietly traded this land for other land to be used for a school, thus somehow getting around Mr. Darnall?’s final wishes (he was deceased by this time).

The San Diego City Council quietly rezoned the land, and now we see the huge low-income, section eight, multi-story complex where land once stood designated by its former owner for school use only.

The Darnall Community Council fought back through all legal channels, to no avail. The battle continued for some time, but when it was over the developers won.

This ?“quiet?” land trading and rezoning manipulation by our elected officials was done without the knowledge, let alone the consent of the Darnall community.

Constance Mitchell now sits on the Eastern Area Community Planning Council, but is considering retiring.

MEMBERS MEETING WITH COUNCILMAN JIM MADAFFER

Some C.D.L.members had a long conversation with Mr. Madaffer on Tuesday about our cause. Here?’s what transpired in another nutshell.

Madaffer said he had many calls concerning our cause, and is still receiving them! That?’s the good news. However, he said this is not within his jurisdiction, but falls under the San Diego City School Board. Any change in use of school property is controlled by the School Board, not the City Council. That?’s the bad news. The C.D.L informed him we fear what happened in Darnall may happen in Rolando Park. He agreed, but school land issues are out of his hands. However, REZONING ISSUES ARE IN HIS HANDS. Let?’s be sure to keep a close eye on Mr.Madaffer?’s hands.

Madaffer said our course of action should include calls and e-mails to the School Board; so here we go again C.D.L. members. Fire up that Mac, PC or telephone and let?’s start squawking and howling. We?’re going into the ?“old-run-around?” mode now. We were effective with Mr. Madaffer, so let?’s be as effective with the School Board!

The numbers below were given us by Jim Madaffer?’s office staff, hope it?’s correct. If anyone knows more about who to contact, let us know here at communications. It took us several calls to several places just to find the numbers below. It seems like no one in our city government is sure of very much, these numbers included.

SAVING THE CANYON

I have enjoyed the beauty of Zena Canyon for many years. I made the decision to purchase my home based on the fact that my backyard looks out onto this canyon. I will do everything that I can to assure that this open space remains just that. I believe it is crucial that those of us who want to keep this space in its natural state must act TOGETHER immediately and persistently to assure that this happens. I appreciate the existence of the Canyon Defense League of Rolando Park for providing the vehicle for this united action and communication between us but I also believe it is critical that we also join forces with the Sierra Club Canyons Campaign because this is an issue they've been working on for some time. Their vision is to protect and restore all the canyons of San Diego. Eric Bowlby, the Sierra Club's Canyon Preservation Organizer has already met with the C.D.L. of R.P. and will be conducting a tour of Zena Canyon in July. Please consider joining the Sierra Club-(for more info, visit their website: sandiego.sierraclub.org/canyoncoaltion & the C.D.L. of R.P. to save our beautiful canyon!----Audrey Ledesma
