Mack Hatcher Opposition by Letter

Mack Hatcher Opposition by Letter

February 26, 2001

Dear City Official:

I am a resident of Rebel Meadows. Although I am not against development in Franklin, I am against the destruction of established quality neighborhoods in which good citizens have been raising families for the past 20 years. Since 1985, residents of Rebel Meadows, who are hardworking pillars of our community, have been living in fear that the poor decisions made in years past will continue to proceed without regard to the established quality of home life, community, and relationships – ideals that the City of Franklin so highly touts.

The future decisions of the Board of Mayor and Alderman and the exercising of their influence with the Tennessee Department of Transportation will certainly set precedence with not only Rebel Meadows, but also any other neighborhood /subdivision/community within the reaches of city annexation. The conscious decision, whether by action or inaction, to allow (and thereby support) the destruction of said communities will certainly sour the sweet taste of “progressive development” for years to come.

Therefore, I respectfully request that the city publicly acknowledge and adopt the position that Mack Hatcher’s proposed Northern Routes “A” and “B” are unacceptable in the current state of planning. Furthermore, the city should also publicly emphasize (in words and action) the importance of protecting established affordable neighborhoods, as they are essential to a well-rounded, diverse community. Rebel Meadows Subdivision is one of Franklin’s more desirable affordable housing neighborhoods. Implementing the current bypass plan would certainly downgrade the quality and essence of our neighborhood.

I, along with the other members of my community, am willing to publicly support the placement of the future Mack Hatcher/Hillsboro Road intersection north of it’s current location to alleviate traffic congestion, to provide greater safety to the Franklin High school zone, to protect Rebel Meadows from the possible environmental consequences, and to allow our neighborhood to stay intact as was intended at inception. Additionally, we would consider endorsing other alternatives that could achieve the previously mentioned goals.

It is my request that as our community’s elected officials, the Mayor and Board of Alderman rise to our request for action to support the will of your constituents. The future successes of the Board will depend on its ability to ensure that the needs of the people are met while managing Franklin’s impending growth.

Sincerely,
