The inaugural event is Robert Rust's talk, Arts and Crafts Home Interiors" on March 28th. Mr. Rust will provide valuable insight into the philosophy behind the Arts and Crafts movement that sought to return individual attention to workmanship and design during the early 20th century. Robert Rust co-authored two books with Kitty Turgeon on the Arts and Crafts movement, including The Arts and Crafts Home and Arts and Crafts. He also produces a newsletter, The Craftsman Home Owner.

This is the second year of the HPEC Speakers' Series. The 2000 Series featured talks on historic masonry, how to choose the appropriate paint color for your older home, and vintage interior lighting. Other HPEC projects for 2001 include the Congress Park House Tour on June 10, 2001 and an upcoming book in the Historic Denver Walking Tour Book Series.

April 25th: Women's history expert Nancy Niero will speak about "Play Ball:
The Beginnings of Women at the Bat." Ms. Niero, an interpretive historian who has been known to play vintage women's baseball, is the Director of Clear Creek History Park. She will be wearing a real vintage uniform for her talk. Come recognize the value of women's history, commemorate the start of baseball season, celebrate the opening of the Colorado Rockies 2001 session and anticipate the arrival of a new baseball field to old Congress Park.

May 23rd: Phil Goodstein, Ph.D., local historian, will discuss "Capitol Heights' History: The Birth and Growth of our Neighborhood". He has taught at Metropolitan State College and conducted numerous walking tours of Congress Park and other Denver neighborhoods. Dr. Goodstein's approach is often surprising and sometimes shocking but he is always entertaining. Books by the prolific Dr. Goodstein include Denver Streets: Names, Numbers, Locations and Logic; Denver in our Time: A People's History of the Modern Mile High City; The Ghosts of Denver: Capitol Hill; The Seamy Side of Denver; South Denver Saga and Exploring Jewish Colorado.

July 25th: This year, Paul Duchscherer, a long time proponent of historic preservation, will deliver the first annual Thomas Koch Memorial Address. The Address, entitled "The History of American Bungalow Architecture" explores the importance of the often overlooked and misunderstood bungalow. Mr. Duchscherer has lived in San Francisco, the birthplace of the bungalow, for over 25 years. He owns an interior design business specializing in period-style projects and has taught courses in design that respects historic architecture. In addition he has co-authored several books including Inside the Bungalow, Outside the Bungalow and The Bungalow: America's Arts and Crafts Home. The Donald W. Koch Memorial Address is an annual event dedicated to the memory of Donald W. Koch, a Denver planner and historian who chronicled the development of the Congress Park Neighborhood and willed funds to Congress Park Neighbors following his death in November 2000. The Address brings speakers of high caliber to inform residents about issues related to neighborhood history and architecture. Tickets will be sold in advance and at the door.

August 22nd: Spence Sanders, owner of "Doctor Plumber," a clearinghouse for antique plumbing supplies, will talk about "From Bathtubs to Bidets: Historic Plumbing Fixtures." Doctor Plumber has specialized in original and reproduction vintage plumbing fixtures for the past 14 years. 75 years old, Mr. Sanders has been a licensed contractor plumber for over 50 years and has been providing vintage fixtures for the Colorado Historical Society. During the remodeling of the Grand Humphries mansion Mr. Sanders collaborated with 30 other designers and contractors. He will share his expertise in fixtures and older plumbing tools, as well as his love of all antiques. For an added treat, come see Mr. Sanders' grandson, the only journeyman plumber registered with the Denver Public Schools, as he juggles faucet handles and makes fixtures disappear using sleight of hand.
September 26th: Peter Schneider, professor of architecture, will present: "Building with Respect for the Past," discussing how one approaches redesign or new design issues when one owns an older or historic home. Mr. Schneider is on the faculty at the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Colorado at Denver. He recently received several grants, including one for a study entitled "Found Spaces: Mindful Practice in Architectural Design."
