WASHINGTON PARK EAST HISTORIC DESIGNATION UPDATE
Progress & Preservation . . . Together is pleased to announce the first potential Washington Park East historic district. We have worked with the City over the last year to find tools to help preserve the character and ambiance of the neighborhood. While several beneficial zoning changes have taken place, they do not address many of the demolition or design issues that are impacting the character of East Washington Park. As a result, we are working on historic district designation. The proposed district which is being studied and which PPT plans to submit to the Landmark Commission and City Council in the future, is the area bordered by Exposition and Louisiana and between Franklin and the alley between South Race and South Vine, as shaded on the map. Our long-term goal is to preserve and protect the character of Washington Park East. Two additional potential districts would be in the areas shown on the map.
Why has this area been chosen? Because this area has a strong attachment to Washington Park and South High, and a large number of historical structures and integrity are still present. A tremendous amount of work has been and remains to be completed before the application for designation can be submitted for approval by the Landmark Commission and City Council. We need your help. For the neighborhood research, we also need real estate abstracts of your home's ownership history, photos and any other artifacts about the neighborhood, including your home. There will also be opportunities to work on fund raising, publicity, and to be a volunteer block captain.
