Portland Tourism

Historic Portland

The Portland Museum is currently working on a plan to have tours of the Portland Historic District. This area's boundries are 33rd Street west to 37th Street, Bank Street on the South and Missouri Alley on the North. Several structures in this area are historically significant and will be highlighted during the tours.

Structures of significance.

All the structures of this area are considered significant in one form or the other.
Some of the structures that will be highlighted are the Peter Portman House, the Osbourn House, the Campbell House, the Portland Library, Portland Elementary, Parkway Methodist Church and Squire Earick House.

Even though it is not in the Historic District the Meek-Miller house is listed on the State register and will also be highlighted.

There are several others that are architecturally important.

The museum has information on several of the structures, but if you live or work in that area or you have something you would like to share with others please contact the museum at 776-7678 or email Mary Turner at mary.turner@insightbb.com.

There is so much that needs to be shared with others about Portland in order for the image to change. Tourism is an opportunity that may help.

Economic Opportunity

If all goes well, and the tourism of Portland takes off, there may be economic opportunities made available to the area residents. They may include Bed and Breakfast lodging, or possibly arts and crafts made by Portland residents and sold as a keepsake of the visits. It would also encourage small mom and pop type stores. Jobs could be created.

A lot of this will depend on what the tourism plan will include. The Wharf Park would be a destination point for week long visits learning about archaeology. So much potential.
Portland is a strong and independent community, and has always had people who are willing to work for a good cause. If anyone is interested in becoming involved in tourism or the other projects listed in the newsletter (on this web site), please call the museum at 776-7678, someone will be willing to give you information.
