What was that smoky smell?

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Many residents across the Houston area noticed a smell of smoke in the air this morning, but the problem wasn't anywhere near here.

Bryan Lambeth, a senior meteorologist with the TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality), says they believe the smoke is coming from forest fires in East Texas and Louisiana. The smell that many people noticed this morning was unusual because for an hour or so, they measured over 100 micrograms per cubic meter of particulate matter at two test stations -- one in Seabrook, the other in Clear Lake. This level is much higher than normal.

Experts could actually see the particulate matter meters rising from an area from south of Port Arthur on westward to the Houston area. Winds were out of the east overnight.
