Pasture Point

From Sgt. Michael Canny

All:

I am sure we are all relieved to have all the snow gone, and are looking forward to being able to get outside and enjoy some warmer weather. With the more pleasant  weather, we typically see certain activity increase, so I wanted to give everyone a few tips in advance and try to prevent any problems from arising.

First, we all are going to be happy to open up the doors and windows—but please close and lock them (car and house) when you are not present. It is also very important to keep your utility buildings, storage sheds, and garages, closed and locked when unattended. We have seen items taken out of garages even when homeowners were present in the home or in the back yard. Power tools and bicycles are frequent targets. As foot traffic picks up, so do larcenies.

Those of us who like to walk or run will also be happy—but we need to take some precautions too.  Use sidewalks whenever they are present, as opposed to walking or running in the street, and wear clothing that will enhance your visibility to others, especially at night. Have some form of identification with you and carry a cell phone in case of emergencies; at night, a flashlight is also an excellent idea. If you bring your pets with you, please keep them on a leash for their safety. There is a wide variety of personal and pet equipment available to enhance visibility, some of which is very inexpensive.

I am sure you will also start to plan your spring and summer community events before too long. If you would like the Police Division to be present at or participate in an event, please try to give us as much notice as possible so we can try to plan ahead and attend, especially if you have a certain topic or concern you would like us to address.

Last but not least, please do not hesitate to contact the Police Division whenever you see something that is hazardous or suspicious.  We would much rather check something out and find nothing than have to go back later and conduct an investigation with limited information. Please save 911 for emergencies—for other matters, call 727-6111.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have.

 Thank You.
