BIG BLUE
The Solid Waste Management Division makes sure trash is picked up across the City. City crews service about 60,500 customers and the contracted crews service 76,000 more.
We also sweep the streets and pick up trash illegally dumped on City right-of-way.
City Council has approved changes in trash pickup to hold down costs and increase service. They took effect in September, 2002.
The biggest difference to customers is that they can have, upon request, two free Big Blues. That will increase the amount of trash that can be picked up by trucks with lifting arms, and reduce the amount of trash that has to be picked up by hand.
But you have to ask for one to get one. Call 495-BLUE for more information.
City crews no longer collect trash left at the curb in commercial trash cans - that is, the kind of outdoor can you buy at the store.
But we will collect plastic trash bags if you have two full Big Blues at curbside.
Big Junk pickup is once a month, with a limit on how much can be placed at the curb for any one pickup.
Curbside Recycling
If you want to help the environment and hold down landfill costs, or just save room in your big can, you'll like our weekly curbside recycling service. Just put your recyclables into your Little Blue and carry it out to the curb.
We'll sort your recyclables for you.

Aluminum and steel food and beverage cans
Glass food and beverage jars and bottles
(note: we can't pick up non-food cans or bottles)
Newspapers, newspaper inserts and magazines
Extra help with yard waste, when you need it most
If Big Blue is full, put yard waste in plastic bags. Set them at the curb, and we'll pick them up too. Beginning in September, you'll have to fill two Big Blues before we'll pick up other trash. Read more about it here.
''Big Junk'' pickup goes monthly
Big Junk is the stuff that's too big and awkward to fit in Big Blue. It can be almost anything, including furniture and old appliances. We pick up Big Junk once every quarter, but starting in September, we'll pick it up once a month.
On your Big Junk day, set your junk out at your usual curbside spot (arm's length from the curb) and we'll haul it away. Your old broken washing machine, couches, tree limbs, almost anything you've got that won't fit in Big Blue we'll haul away for you on Big Junk day.
Your next Big Junk pickup day is posted on your water bill.
You still might need a friend to help carry the old couch to the curb, but with Big Junk pickup you probably won't have to borrow his pickup anymore. (Or lend yours!)
