Controlling the growth

Between a Rock and a Hard place

I think there needs to be a PUBLIC summit type meeting between the Schools, the City, and the Township Trustees. The schools have embarked on a ten year plan with virtually no input from the two government entities that control land use in the district.

I was reading one of the papers and the Township stated in the last week or so that they have only issued 35 residential Building permits so far this year. I think that number is a fourth of what has been issued in previous years.

Over the weekend I ran into a member of our city council. He tells me that the city has only issued 121 single family building permits so far this year.

This is mid-August and this is peak season for building permits. Where have all the builders gone?

The city is about to impose impact fees and that will cost the new home buyer $3,470.

Interest rates are raising

I have heard the city is going to impose design standards that will probably add 8 to 10 Thousand dollars to a new home.

I am sure somewhere I read the city expects to significantly raise their sewer and water tap fees. Probably costing new home owners another 3 or 4 Thousand dollars for that dream home.

Just with what the city is adding to the cost of a new home we can see about $16,000 more in the cost of new homes in the city this time next year. That adds another $95 per month. Just a one percent increase in the interest rate on a $200,000 loan will cost a new home buyer around $166 more per month.

Now if the existing taxpayers won't support a $37 per month school levy will anyone be buying their dream home in Pickerington next year?

Now we have a school district that wants to qualify for the state school funding like so many people have asked them to do. The only problem with that is the schools then must show uncontrolled growth over the next ten years.

OK they have issued their report and it shows growth and it is based on historical data from past years. So what should we all do?

Should the city voters turn out the slow growth people this November so we can get state funding for our schools or should we plan to build the damn school buildings ourselves WITHOUT out the state funding?

Has anyone at the school board ever heard of school districts like Medina, Ohio that have a number of their buildings on a shared basis with the city or the local college or their Hospital?

What happens to this plan if we only have 200 new student this year?

What happens to this plan if we only have 125 new students in 2006?

Before the voters approve anymore of anything we all need to sit down and get the straight skinny on what our options are and not what the Local Teachers union wants.
