Not asking for equal
Everyone seems to be confused about what the Central track team is requesting. We are not the ones asking for 5 million dollar stadium. we are asking for one more lane. And I fail to see why this causing an uproar. We are not asking for an equal faciilty to North...frankly, we don't have the numbers to justify that. North's girls track team has over 50 runners, here at Central, we have 28. This is the smallest number of runners for any D1 school in central ohio. Don't expect those numbers to grow, either. With the attention our team seems to be getting from our schools and community, what would be the point? Sure, we are lucky to be able to practice on North's track. But does any other team have to share faciilities? The trip to North adds time onto our practice every day. Someone earlier mentioned the expensive price of gas...our parents and the upperclassmen must drive to and from North every day of the week, and that price adds up. You're right Ms. Ross, there is daylight until 8 pm...but not all of us are strictly track runners. Many of us hold jobs, take on heavy class loads, and are involved in a myriad of activities that would not permit us to be practicing a sport at 8 oclock. Despite the inconveniences of this season, our team has made great strides. We are one of the most diverse and accepting teams in our school...everyone makes the team, and everyone respects each other. But our numbers will continue to dwindle if we don't have adequate facilities and support. When I talked to administrators about why we only would receive a 7 lane track versus the usual 8 lane standard, I was given the reply ''We've got to take care of football first, they bring in the money.'' I find this rather appalling. I for one have always felt that the sport of track has been an escape from politics...it is pure, it is simple. But now I am not sure. I am not sure why one lane is so difficult to provide...it is not that costly, especially in comparison to some of the other frivolties our district has chosen to purchase in the past. What will be costly, however, is the disillusionment and disappointment felt by a team that can't understand why its community is so apathetic toward its success.
