Newsweek Objective?

Not to rag on Newsweek but are they the people that just got caught like Dan Rather in puffing up a story and publishing it as if it were true only to find out later that it was false. I believe the story in question is with the US military in Gitmo and how they disrespected the Curran and the suspected terrorists. Unfortunately this story caused a riot in Afghanistan and 17 people died and 100s were injured.

I am not sure what factors went into determining their 1000 best schools in the nation. Clearly the word ''best'' only exists in the eyes of the beholder. What is their definition of Best?

I also know that Centennial High School on Bethel Road in Columbus is in a very good neighborhood and they do get recognition on different fronts. However I also think Newsweek does not have the resources to actually give every school district in the country equal consideration.

That is not to say that Centennial HS didn't deserve this honor and maybe they do have a lot of qualities that should be recognized nationally. However I also think just like the proficiency tests PLSD always touts as their mark of legitimacy these kinds of contests are basically a waste of time and effort.

With that said It would be beneficial to have a standardized grading system in our schools and how each school performs nationally. If the grading system was objective it would be a great tool to help shape the kind of school district the citizens in general wanted. These ratings by some news magazine are in my opinion, counter productive.
