Don't become them

As many of us that have the time to watch the evening news are seeing, a sad story is unfolding about our public education system.

I refer to the Sexual Assault on the Mifflin High School teenager and where the school administrators neglected to call the police. The more that comes out on this case should give us all pause in what happens once we leave our children off at the front door of the school building.

Although the incidents that I have contacted the Pickerington Schools about have not been as serious as this above incident, I have encountered a ?“protect the school image at all cost?” attitude. I believe there was some of that here on this web site about the beer bottle attack incident at North High last year.

I have not seen the written policy our Pickerington school system uses but it seems to me Columbus was so entangled with written policy that they lost total common sense in this incident. Last night we learned that it was the father that actually called 911 and the Columbus Police went to the wrong school. TWICE!! I guess there is more than one Columbus School with the name Mifflin.

Trying to defend her actions the one administrator said, ?“She thought it was consensual sex and that goes on all the time at the school.?” The question then, are they running a public High School or a bordello? She then went on to say, ?“There were no apparent injuries.?” Sometimes it is better when idiots remain silence. How she ever got a job as a teacher or an administrator is beyond me.

I know some of the PLSD board members visit this web site. I also know that for what ever reason there has been urge on the part out our PLSD administrators to cover up incidents and negative facts about our school system. I believe this is driven by the strong desire to pass levies and those in charge feel they must not give any ammunition to those that might oppose these levies. I am encouraged that there has been efforts to keep our local police more involved in drug searches in the last year or so. Clearly if our students have places within the school facilities to meet for consensual sexual or even drug use then the Administrators must close off those areas. I would even extend that to just hanging out in places out of the teacher?’s prying eyes as well.
Reports of assault especially sexual in nature do not always show through someone?’s clothing. At the very least medical attention should have been called. I have heard rumors of administrators in our system finding drugs or removing them from students and then at the end of the year they turn the drugs over to the police. Using drugs is a crime. It is not the discretion of some school administrator to determine if a crime has been committed. Assault whether it be sexual or otherwise is a crime even in a bar. The police should be called.

Clearly our students do enjoy a more suburban environment. However there are a number of group homes and foster care homes that bring into our schools those children from inter city environments. We must demand and retain our standards and not fall into and accept the environments from which these children have come from.
