I just a read a letter to the editor in the Columbus Dispatch and this letter was written by a teacher in the South Western School district. Recently that school district?’s voters defeated a school operating levy. The focus in her letter was blaming Governor Taft for the school funding problems we face in this state.
It is amazing to me that a person that is teaching our children has so little command of money issues and never once takes any responsibility for the funding problems of our schools.
The fact is that 80% or more of the operating expenses for our schools go to fund the staff. The fact is those expenses are rising faster than the school populations and this teacher?’s only solution is to get more money from the state. It is the state's fault!!
If the teaching of our children is so important and this teacher honestly feels a genuine need to education our children fine then she and her union members should propose that the teachers take a huge cut in pay and benefits this would allow the school districts to balance their budgets and go on educating the children.
This teacher was complaining about the vouchers being proposed by the governor. The fact is that we have over loaded our school system with high paid well educated staff that is still failing to bring our educational system up to the expectations of the taxpayers. If Home School mothers with only a high school education can educate their children then having a Master?’s degree to teach K-9 is over kill.
Let?’s face it. The brightest of our college educated people do not graduate from the education department of our colleges. Many times these education majors have transferred from other disciplines because they failed in math and science.
The educational field needs some real over hauling and for it to succeed it must start with in the individual schools. I think massive lay offs and massive cuts in their benefits would be a good start. The rest of us must survive these cuts and if the purpose of our educational system is to teach our children life then giving our teachers a first hand look at life would be very beneficial in my opinion.
Every other section of the economy has made huge improvements in productivity in recent years expect the educational system. It is time.
