responsibility

One issue that is coming out here is the responsibility that our young people don?’t have anymore.

When I moved to Pickerington a little over 10 years ago we had a paper boy. He would always placed our paper on the door mat and he was always punctual. He would keep his account up to date and if he did missed he would run another paper over to me. He went off to college. From then on the quality and responsible paper carriers seemed have deteriorated as time went on until this past year the Dispatch has only given the route to adults.

A couple of days ago my wife and I went to Kroger to pick up a few items. As we were leaving a lady was pushing into the store one of those square carts that the carry out clerks use. This lady looked to be in her mid-seventies and totally white hair. This was also a weekend day. Why do we have 70 year old women carrying out our groceries when there must be two or three thousand teenagers living in this community?

When I was in school and if I wanted to attend a school event and my parents couldn?’t drive me there I would walk. I had to cross the rail road train yard to get home. There must have been a dozen or so sets of tracks to cross. Now we as parents are reluctant to allow our kids to cross one track that is seldom used.

Now we load them up with extra curricular activities thinking we are teaching them how to be responsible and we find our kids are still living with us when they are 30.

Maybe as a charter builder we build our school system that encourages our students to walk. If there are squeamish parents then let those parents drive their own kids to school. What about crossing guards? Here again it was an honor to be named the captain of the crossing guards in the sixth grade. Folks that is the beginning of leadership training at age 12.

Why can?’t we find responsible children anymore? Have any of you gone into a store and the bill was $11.53 and you hand the teenage clerk $20.53 and they look at you with a puzzled look. Please don?’t ever attempt this AFTER the teenage clerk has entered the $20 symbol on their cash register.

A few years ago we heard that if we sent our kindergarten kids to full day school that it would damage the poor darlings. My sister has a boy that has had other problems with life in general and her son attends full day kindergarten 2 or 3 days a week. He was recently tested and his reading skills are at the second grade level and no one outside of school has worked with him. He is ahead of himself in social skills as well.

Maybe if we start to expect more from our kids like being able to walk to school as instructed to do so by their parents at an early age they may also learn to be responsible at the older age.
