School Bond Issue

Posted in: PATA
Last night the school board voted 5-0 to put a $36 million bond levy on the ballot. This levy would be used to build 2 elementary schools, one of which is to be located in Sycamore Creek, add space in either one of the new buildings or attached to a current building for an expansion of the rooms needed for the state-mandated special needs pre-k program, land purchases, and improvements to existing buildings.

This was option #2 of the three submitted to the board by the school facilities committee. The millage is 2.4 mills, and would add $78 per $100,000 valuation to the property taxes.
Band-Aid

That's all it is. Ask one of the board members when they will have to come back to us for more.

The answer is NEXT YEAR!!

What is your objection?

Is it simply ''they will be back next year for more''? I know of no one who doesn't think that will happen. The facts are that the elementary schools are needed, and, down the line, there is a need for another middle school. If you want to change things, it may be you need to run for one of the three open seats next year. Give us your ideas and see what the public thinks about them.

There will be operating levies expiring over the next few years, and the needs of the district will have to be addressed. Even if no new schools were ever to be built again in our district, operating levies would still be needed.

We can't simply shut off the influx of new families and students into the PLSD.

Specifically, what would you desire (on the local level) to solve our problems? A dramatic increase in state funding to all districts, which will not happen, would only mean higher costs to the taxpayers, as the money for that will have to come from somewhere. Guess who pays that tab?
