Difference is.......

What you say is true that when budgets are tight the PLSD cuts extra curriculars first.

The difference here IMO is that Safety shouldn't be an extra curricular. It seems that it is popular with the voters so something that if threatened to cut we will support. That may seem similar to sports, but what would you have the district cut ?? Math, English, God forbid - teachers salaries ?? You have to start with what's most expendible - in the case of the county I don't think they did that.

Please get out and vote today - I hope the turnout is not as low as predicted!

vote

I believe they have gotten into the academices real quick in the past. I believe they have went after the gifted and langauge programs but the sports gets the voters every time.
Language

I can't speak about gifted - but I have kids in the language programs & can pass on info on that topic.

What used to occur is the student took 7th grade Spanish for .5 credits & 8th grade Spanish for .5 credits & got to 9th grade to take Spanish 2.

Now you can take Spanish in the 8th grade only but it's for a whole credit. Still take spanish 2 in the 9th grade - the kids don't lose & neither do academics. Why should it take 2 years to complete 1 credit year of a language anyway ??

That's money better spent as far as I'm concerned & I think the kids retain more.
