In 2003, ODOT made a presentation to the Pickerington City Council about re-aligning the State Route 256 and I-70 interchange. Their computer model indicated that this ''fix'' would be good for 12 years (until 2015).
I think most of the new Pickerington City Council members voted to allow ODOT to re-align the interchange based on their promise to either provide the area an additional interchange between 256 and 310. At the very least a re-design of the current interchange was currently being worked on.
As many of us have found out when trying to travel through that interchange in the mornings and even weekends the job was poorly thought out and there are a number of problems with signage, stripping on the roads, and lane alignments.
It appears now that ODOT has satisfied the movers and shakers of the Wal-Mart development by giving them the option of moving their traffic jams down into Pickerington ODOT wants to not do anything further to correct the traffic problems on the south side of I-70 as they promised earlier this year.
According to the newspapers articles and quotes from the Pickerington Police Department the number of accidents are remaining the same in this area. I believe during ODOT's presentation in 2003 that was the prime justification for ODOT addressing the 256/I-70 interchange SAFETY AND THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS. The work and money ODOT has spent (our taxpayer money) so far hasn't improved the situation one bit. In fact, I am hearing they ODOT is unwilling to address further complaints from the public. They feel they have done all they are going to do. They have also scraped any ideas of an additional interchange between 256 and 310.
I would request anyone in this community that has had problems with the new alignment to e-mail the ODOT District 5 DIrector Chris Engle and tell him your story.
