More houses than you think!!

Here?’s some interesting data I was able to glean from this site and another regarding our neighbors to the west. These are proposed developments along Refugee Road out by the police station. No wonder they put the station there! By the way, Columbus will run this up to 8.8 per acre if the mood suits them. These children will go to Pickerington schools, not Columbus. Why would Columbus care about densities in other school districts?

7351 Refugee Road (Homewood Corp.) has the following stats:

Planned Urban Development?–6 with 68.6 acres planning 85 single family lots equaling 4.45 units per acre or 206 multi-family units
.
*268 Students?

*11 classrooms?

Turnberry Creek at 7450 Refugee Road (Homewood Corp.) has the following stats:

Planned Urban Development?–4 with 41.6 acres planning 96 multi-family units equaling 2.3 units per acre.

*125 Students? If it was single family, but it is not. It is multi-family!!

*5 Classrooms? If it was single family, but it is not. It is multi-family!!

F and G Development at 3565 Hines Road has the following stats:

Zoned R ?– 2 for now with 124.56 acres approved for 5,000 square foot lots which equates roughly to 8.8 units per acre

*125 acres times 8.8 units per acre = 1100 units?

*1430 Students?

*44 Classrooms?

*this denotes where I did some math

Hey School Board ?– can we redraw the school boundaries to keep these developments out???

Hey School Board ?– Have you planned for these 1823 potential students?

Hey council ?– how do you feel about all this section 8 at your boundary??

Oh, by the way - THANKS LEE GRAY for getting Homewood more into Pickerington!

Redrawing District Boundaries

Dear Scared,

I understand your frustration about development within the PLSD that Pickerington can't control. I also want to shed some light on the issue. The planned developments along Refugee Road have been in the works for some time. The reason Hines Road was to have closed last year, which has been rescheduled for after this school year ends, is to run water/sewer lines out to the properties. The residents of Park Place and Park Place West were successful in delaying the closure of Hines Road because of the safety concern of having only one ingress/egress at Brice Road while the Tussing Road bridge was still under construction. At the time, both Mayor Postage and Councilman Wright wrote letters to the editor concerning Columbus not working with Pickerington over the closing of Hines Road or planning developments that affect Pickerington and the PLSD. The two of them plus Ted Hackworth also attended a Park Place Community Meeting to show support to the Park Place residents.

Columbus owns approximately 100 acres along Refugee Road that are currently planned for apartments. I haven't heard if they are 1- 2- 3- or more bedroom apartments. The number of bedrooms will affect the number of children who will be enrolled in the school district.

The Hines Road area is currently nearly built out.

There are still apartments on the north side of Tussing Road within the PLSD that are not rented, so I wouldn't assume that all apartments will be rented as soon as they are built.

As far as your question to the School Board about redrawing the school boundaries, this is something I checked into a while ago. As a Columbus resident within the PLSD, I am keenly aware of the ''send the Columbus kids back to Columbus'' sentiment. For school boundaries to be redrawn, there has to be an equal exchange of property. This is much easier to do when an entire area is farmland than it is to do once development occurs. In addition, there are two school districts between Pickerington and Columbus - Groveport Madison and Reynoldsburg. For an exchange of property to occur, the boundaries have to be contiguous. Both Groveport Madison and Reynoldsburg have crowding problems, so it is doubtful they would even consider taking additional students. Because the properties in question have always belonged in the PLSD, and Columbus annexed into the district, sending the kids somewhere else is virtually impossible.

I'm also curious as to where you got your information that it is all secion 8 housing. It may be and I just haven't heard. Could you post the source of the information?

Thanks.
