PICKERINGTON -- Construction has started on the city's first permanent skateboarding park.
The 8,000-square-foot facility will be in Sycamore Park, the city's largest park. It is expected to be completed by mid-December.
This project is right for Pickerington, said Steve Carr, director of the Pickerington Parks and Recreation.
''Skateboarding is one of the fastest-growing sports in America and just about all Central Ohio communities have opened or are in the process of building a skate park,'' Carr said.
The only other permanent skate park in Fairfield County is Miller Park in Lancaster.
Pickerington's project originally was slated to be done by the end of October, but the project was delayed because of the weather, said Jeff Kraus, the city's public information officer.
The skate park will be on the lower level of the park, off of Covered Bridge Lane.
The total budget for the project is $125,000. The modular equipment purchased cost $62,500. The equipment is portable and can be rearranged, said Kraus.
''The cement is in place right now, and the city will put the equipment together, with supervision from Skate Wave (the company that makes the brand of equipment),'' Kraus said.
The equipment will be assembled during the week of Nov. 24, and the fencing is tentatively scheduled to be installed on Dec. 1.
There will be benches but no additional lighting. Security cameras also may be added.
In the late 1990s, there was a temporary skate park in the upper level of Sycamore Park, but it was taken down, Carr said.
In addition to the skate park, construction has begun on the addition of a 1,500-square-foot chipping green at Sycamore Park. The project is expected to cost more than $20 million.
A synthetic putting green will give golfers the chance to practice year-round. Construction on that project is scheduled to be done by the spring.
