OCFD’S NEWEST STATION IS THE JUNE CFAAA MEETING LOCATION

Nine members were in attendance during the May CFAAA meeting, held May 21 at station 32.
When station 32 was built, the only thing that was close was the housing addition of Surrey Hills. Surrey Hills was “out in the country” at that time and was a premier area.
Since that day, the Surrey Hills area has seen a great deal of growth, which includes Sundance Airpark, which is on the outer edge of station 32’s eastern district, and countless homes. The area also includes Surrey Hills Country Club and Golf Course.
Since the station is still classified as an outlying station, it is a BLS (basic life support) station, with no paramedics.
The station has their share of full arrests. The station officer told us they have yet to lose a full arrest patient at the scene, with the exception of DOA’s (Dead On Arrival).
The area also has had some notable residents, the most notable being the late actor Dale Robertson.
We thank Billy Gaines, Reubin Ellis and Carlton Neal for their hospitality.
The June CFAAA meeting will be held at OCFD’s newest station, station 26, which is at the northeast corner of SW 119 and Rockwell. If you haven’t seen this station, you will not want to miss this meeting.
The easiest way to the station is south on I-44 to SW 119, turn right and head west on SW 119. The station will be on your right.
The meeting will start at 6:30 PM. Bring enough food for eight firefighters and yourself.
Guests are always welcome.

NEW RECRUIT CLASS BEGINS

59 men and women have begun training in the latest OCFD recruit class.
With over 200 firefighters being eligible for retirement in 2015, OCFD needs to be ready to replace the retirees, plus others who have already retired.
The class started May 8 and will conclude with graduation ceremonies to be held in September (date to be determined).

ANNUAL “MDA FILL THE BOOT”
"Fill the Boot"! OKC firefighters were on major street corners from May 11 - May 16.
The MDA Fill-the-Boot tradition began more than 50 years ago and the OCFD is honored to continue this partnership with MDA.
Last year, the citizens of this great city donated over $293,000! The money raised during the Fill-the- Boot campaign constitutes a bulk of the funding for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

FIRE DEPARTMENT HISTORY: THE CREATION OF FIRE SERVICE
In 1735, Franklin sent the following letter, anonymously, to his own paper. A year later he started, what is said to be, the first organized fire department.
"In the first Place, as an Ounce of Prevention is worth a Pound of Cure, I would advise 'em to take care how they suffer living Coals in a full Shovel, to be carried out of one Room into another, or up or down Stairs, unless in a Warmingpan shut; for Scraps of Fire may fall into Chinks and make no Appearance until Midnight; when your Stairs being in Flames, you may be forced, (as I once was) to leap out of your Windows, and hazard your Necks to avoid being oven-roasted."

RIDE-A-LONGS
If you haven’t done any ride-a- long’s lately, we urge you do take advantage of it.
We are entitled to three per year, and it is a great way to enjoy the company of firefighters and to see firsthand what they do.
RIDE-A-LONG

Have you done a ride-a-long with the Fire Department? We would like to hear about it, especially if there was an exciting ride. Email Rob Anderson with details. If there was more than one, I will publish the most exciting.
Be sure to add the station number, shift color (if you know it), and some of the names of firefighters.
To schedule a ride-a-long, contact Tess Hague at 297-3314, Monday – Thursday 8:00 AM till 2:00 PM and she will get you scheduled.
