2015 FUNNIEST STORY WINNER SELECTED

Station nine, blue shift, was selected the winner of the 2014 funniest story, during the CFAAA February meeting, held February 19 at station eight. Their submission was a Chihuahua vs. a Mouse. For the story, they will receive a check for $150.00.

During the meeting, President James Augenstein announced the resignation of secretary Brookly Rogers. Carole Ann Koger was elected to replace Rogers, effective immediately.

Other business included a reminder that CFAAA members receive three ride-a-longs per year…and a thank you from Operation Warmth for CFAAA’s donation.

Station eight is one of the more unique stations in the fact it is the home to the City’s dive team and several pieces of high level rescue equipment. The station covers a fairly small first in district which is largely the Stockyards and surrounding areas. Should we have another major disaster, the station is ready and available for nearly any type rescue.

Major Keith McMurphy, station officer, said about eight to nine percent of all figrefighters City- wide are capable and trained for dive operations, even though the dive team is mainly at station eight.

Also, we were treated to a tour of the dive headquarters, located in the old station eight building across from the current station.

During the meeting, McMurphy also advised us of his retirement this May. CFAAA wishes him well.

The March meeting will be held March 19th,  at station five, which is located slightly south of NW 23, on Broadway. It is located on an island seperating the north and south bound lanes of Broadway. The meeting, as always, will start at 6:30 PM. Be sure to bring enough food for yourself, and ten firefighters.

CFAAA thanks the entire crew at station eight for their hospitality and a very informative meeting.

Ride-A-Long with Station #14

By: Keith Sossamon

On Saturday, January 31, 2015, I had the privilege of doing a ride-a-long with fire station #14, one of the busier fire stations. It was a rainy day, so I figured it would be a busy day. I arrived at around 2 pm and, just as I was getting acquainted with Major Mahoney and Major Sutterfield, we get a call to check on a power pole that was on fire.

my_ride_along.jpg

Not only did I get to ride-a-long with the engine, I was able to ride once with the rescue ladder and respond with them to an accident on I-44. It turned out there were no injuries. During my stay (I left at 10 pm), we responded to six calls, mostly medical. Not only were the firefighters very polite and cordial, the evening meal was wonderful……charcoaled chicken breast, cooked broccoli and mashed potatoes with bacon.

This was probably one of the best ride-a-longs I have done. Everyone was friendly, polite and answered any question I had. My thanks to the firefighters and to Major Mahoney and Major Sutterfield, for their hospitality.
