OCFD QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICER RETIRES
OCFD Major Barbara Ward speaks to CFAAA member during past meeting (File Photo)
One of the first women to join the Oklahoma City Fire Department as a firefighter, has retired after 27 years.
Barbara Ward joined the department in 1987, and was, at that time, one of a hand full of women to be hired. The first was in 1984, followed by two more in 1986. Including Ward, there were three women in her recruit class.
At that time, there were several obstacles to overcome, including no separate locker rooms for women. Ward said she would count heads, then knock on the door to see if the room was clear. Not long after that, she came up with an idea to place a sign on the door to indicate if the room was occupied by a man or woman. The plan is still used in older stations. Newer stations are built with separate locker rooms.
In 1994, Ward was promoted to Sergeant/driver. Then, in 1997, to Captain and in 1999, to Major. Later she became a Paramedic. In 2004, she started her position as Quality Assurance Officer.
The CFAAA wishes Major Ward all the best during her retirement, and thanks her for her dedicated service.

January CFAAA MEETING
In addition to our January monthly meeting, OCFD asked us to assist during the reception for the new fire department recruits and their families. This was held January 15th at the training center. We assisted by serving pizza and drinks. The fire department provided the meal, while our members provided cookies. We had our monthly business meeting following the reception.
