2005 Annual Meeting

The following is the minutes of the annual meeting of the Association’s Representatives which was held on Wednesday, October 19, 2005. In addition to our guest, Mr. Wayne Smith, Seventh District State Representative, those present were;

Herb Beardsley, Linda and Joe Racz, Roseanne Wolf, Howard Simpkins, Sharon Jennelly, Keelin Fry, Barbara Levy, Denise Brazell, and Steve Hollister.

The meeting started at 7:30, and for almost an hour, Wayne engaged in conversation about many topics pertinent to community living and otherwise, in New Castle County.
• Aircraft Noise above our homes. What to Do?
• The advantages & disadvantages of leasing Interstate 95 and Route 1 to a private firm.
• Potential elimination of the Delaware Student Testing Program (DSTP)
• The possibility of sidewalks on Veale Road

If interested in discussing these issues or other items of interest, Wayne is available every Tuesday morning at Brew HaHa! in the Branmar Plaza from 7AM – 7:30AM.

Wayne has been instrumental in the Roadway Patching and Repaving project that has been completed in Northfield. A request for an estimate from Delaware DOT for Wheatfield Road and Hilton Road was submitted on August 22, 2005 by Ms. Joan Wutka of the House of Representatives. The estimate will be given consideration by Wayne Smith during budget meetings in July 2006. If approved, work will commence in Spring 2007.

We are still looking for someone to help out by representing the Ninth District. The houses in this District are #11–20 Wheatfield Road. Please consider this opportunity, regardless of where you reside.


Speed Limit: Have you noticed the increase in children and pets in our community? This is an excellent visual reminder to honor the posted speed limits in our community both when children are at play and when they’re not. PLEASE TRAVEL SLOWLY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Halloween Parade and Fall Gathering: Sharon Jennelly reported that the arrangements have been made for this year’s parade which was successfully held on Saturday, October 29, 2005. Approximately 25 children had fun as they participated in the parade. The Board authorized the funding for this event in the amount of approximately $100, and agreed to fund next year’s parade. Thanks Sharon for all your time and hard work into making this a success.

Treasurer’s Report: Barbara Levy reported that the current balance is $5,434.16. To receive a copy of this report please contact your representative.
Directory: The Representatives approved the addition of including email addresses in the Community Directory for the purpose of more effective communication with regard to upcoming events. All information in the Directory is held in strict confidence and will only be distributed to your District Representative.

Dues: An assessment of $10 per year per resident is mandatory of all residents of Northfield, Hilton, and Meriden and is due by November 10th. All residents benefit from the services provided by the Civic Association. The funds are needed for snow plowing services, community events, maintenance of our community signs, donations, etc. All expenditures are listed in the Treasurer’s Report.

Snow Plowing: The proposal submitted by Fulmer Snow Plowing Service was selected in part due to the competitive rates they offer. Their past 20 years of dependable service sets then apart from the rest. In addition, participation in the State’s Snow Removal Reimbursement Program will continue. Please remember to remove your vehicles from the roadway when snow is anticipated, as this will result is a more thorough snow plowing job.

Memberships: The Association approved to continue membership in the Council of Civic Associations of Brandywine Hundred. This organization keeps us informed about land use, transportation, parks, public works, and other civic issues important to those throughout Brandywine Hundred. The Association approved to discontinue its membership in the Civic League of New Castle County.

Three Community Yard Sale: Joe and Bonnie Shukitt volunteered to organize a yard sale during the Spring of 2006. The Association agreed to approve funding in the amount of $155 for proper classified advertising of all three communities. A flyer detailing this event will be distributed to your home and/or email early next year.

Donations: The Association agreed to send $200 to the Claymont Fire Company.

Outside Lighting: Each resident is encouraged to keep an exterior light on during the hours of darkness. This improves the security of our neighborhood.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS OF INTEREST:

• SANTA IS COMING to Northfield, Hilton, and Meriden in December. Look for a flyer with details in the upcoming month to be distributed to your home and/or email.
• NEIGHBORHOODLIKE.COM is a free community website in which our Civic Association has a web page under construction. Check it out in the upcoming months for information regarding our community. Also, this is an excellent forum to communicate event ideas you would like to see the Civic Association consider.
• COMMUNITY SAND BARRELS have been requested from the Department of Highways for all three communities. The sand is for all to use to help provide better traction during snow and ice conditions.
