North Attleborough Historical Society

September 2011 Smoke Signals Newsletter

September
Meeting

On Monday, September 19 at 7:30 pm in the Little Red Schoolhouse , the Morin Family will be with
us to share stories past and present. We will be celebrating their hundred years
of business as Morin's Diner in Attleboro.

Historical Collections/
Historic
Surprizes

Last June 5, the Society had its
Historical Collections/Historic Surprises Event. It was designed to make the
offerings of the Society and its properties known to the public and to increase
membership. It achieved both goals with a fairly steady stream of attendees
and  some new memberships. Thanks to all who helped organize and
facilitate and to those who displayed their collections. More similar events are
now in the planning stages.

Welcome

To our new members: Elizabeth Friends and
James Coogan of Sandwich, Frances Sadler of Cranston and Gail Moffitt and the Lubelczyk family of
North Attleborough. We hope to see all of you at our
monthly meetings.

Yard Sale

The first yard sale is Saturday,
September 10, 2011. Spaces go quickly so reserve by calling Bob at 508 695 6649.

Thank You

To those who kept our gardens fresh and
beautiful all summer long. Cheryl Kummer took care of the Gulski Garden and the
Angle Tree Garden Club spent many an early morning working on the Herb Garden.
The Society benefits greatly from their contributions.

Doll Exhibit

The Society will be having an exhibit of
antique dolls on Sunday afternoon, October 30 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Bring your
friends and family to see the collections of some of our
members.

Available to Borrow

The Society has two recent acquisitions
that may be of interest for you to borrow: The Double ACS Studio's DVD of the
Thompson Chemical Fire and the family of Tom Simms has donated his copy of the
pictorial directory and history of Sacred Heart Parish. If either of these are
of interest to you, please contact a trustee.

Something Different

A look at our schedule of monthly
meetings will show something different. In past years, there have been six
Monday evening meetings and one winter Sunday afternoon meeting. This year, two
of our meetings ended up on Sunday afternoons so the board decided to have the
fall meetings continue to be on Monday evenings and the three 2012 meetings will
all be on Sumday afternoons. The annual meeting next May is yet to be
determined. Hopefully there is something for everyone.

Congratulations & Thank You

To Diane Finnegan on being the recipient
of the William and Dorothy Service Award last May. Diane is one of those
wonderful volunteers to the Society whose efforts are most appreciated by all of
us.

The Woodcock Garrison House has stood
beside that huge sycamore tree for nearly 350 years. I can only image the
"conversations" the two edifices have had, especially concerning weather. As
Irene was  bearing down on North Attleborough, the tree lost a huge
branch. Luckily it missed the house,  resulting in only cut-up and
clean-up. How did Irene compare to the hurricane of October 29, 1793 when the
New England coastline was permanently altered? What
about the storm of October 3, 1805 that brought heavy snow to the northern tier
of New England? How did Irene measure up to the two hurricanes of the third week
of August, 1830? Did it even deserve a comparison to 1938 or to Diane or to
Carol? All things considered, Irene treated the Society rather
well.

A packet of information on the
dire financial situation of our Society is being sent to all members. I ask that
you all take time to study the packet and to respond, if possible. A few years
ago, when the capital campaign was held to replace two furnaces, the membership
responded. May the Society do so again.

            The days after Irene were
spectacular. May the days and years ahead for the Society also be spectacular.
