October Meeting

The Photo Detective, Maureen Taylor, will be with us on October 26 at 7:30 at the Little Red Schoolhouse. This is the fourth Monday, not the third. The move was necessary to accommodate schedules. After Maureen's presentation, she will give individual photo consultations. They will each be fifteen minutes long. Each consultation will require a fee of $25.00.

Furnace Fund

It was mentioned in the September Smoke Signals about the situation with our two boilers, both of which needed to be replaced. The cost to the Society for both boilers will be $3,500.00. The fund raising has started. Since that last correspondence, $840.13 has been received. A donation jar at the yard sale yielded the odd dollars and cents. Thank you to all who have contributed and to all who have plans to contribute. Please mail your donations to Jim Hale, 181 Fales Road, North Attleboro and mark them "Furnace Fund."

Yard Sale

October 17 will be a fine Saturday for a yard sale. Do you wish a space at our very visible location? Will you be available to help? If so, call Bob Lanpher at 508-695-6649.

Welcome

To new member Barbara Murray and to the five third grades from Plainville as you enjoy your "Day at the Little Red Schoolhouse.

Holiday Fair

Is it possible that our Holiday Fair and Open House are next month? Yes, it is. Please save Sunday afternoon, November 22 for this wonderful, annual event. To many, it signifies the beginning of the holiday season. Our house is decorated with natural greenery, fruits and pine cones found in the area. The turkey cooked in the reflecting oven in front of the fireplace emits a mouth-watering aroma. The whole scene creates an ambiance of a simpler life-style.

Also, please start planning your contribution to the following fair tables: Christmas, Baked Goods, Knitted Goods, Jewelry, Raffles. Our table chair, Sandi Burns, is at 508-695-7160. Our raffle chair, Heather DeMelia, is at 508-643-2674. Please call with your contributions.

Brook

Please take a ride out back sometime and look at the work that has been done on the brook and the river. The Bristol County Mosquito Control has been busy cleaning, widening and grooming the brook in an attempt to alleviate flooding problems. The Society is very appreciative of all their efforts.

Dues

Please take a moment to mail in your dues if you haven't done so. If you have sent them, thank you.

Happy Fall,

I listened to a report recently that listed Fall as the most favorite season of many. I agree. Those warm sunny days but cool nights are difficult to beat. Yet, after fall comes you-know-what, and it was listed as the least favorite season. At least, this fall, the Society is typically busy, busy, busy and then we hibernate.

Your response to our boilers issues was certainly heartening. Twenty-five percent of our fund came in within the past month. The donations ranged from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. All amounts will help us cover our anticipated $3,500 cost. I hope that by the time you are reading this, the heat will have resumed in our two buildings. Then, the bill will need to be paid.

Regarding our fair in November: If you have been looking for an activity to become more involved with the Society, here is your opportunity. Help with the fair. Guide in one of our Garrison House rooms for the open house. Experience is not necessary! Training will be on the spot. What a deal!

Jim
