Talking to some merchants on Newport Avenue and downtown over the past few months have produced some interesting rumors of demolition of Newport Avenue at the Pawtucket-East Providence line and the reconstruction of downtown streets.

One popular rumor involves the Stop & Shop on Beverage Hill Avenue that is too antiquated and will be demolished in late 2008 or early 2009. In the meantime, the store will be relocated in East Providence, near East Providence High School. In the market's place, a Lowe's center may replace the 24 year old Narragansett Park Plaza.

The second rumor involves the nearby Burlington Coat Factory plaza which may be one of the oldest shopping centers in the area, as it was built almost 50 years ago. Supposedly, a mega Wal-Mart will take over the plaza and East Providence Lanes.

Third of all, who owns the Apex building? Rumors report that Lowe's bought the building from the department store ownership so its competitor Home Depot could not move onto Main Street. However, Lowe's has no plans on demolishing Apex or even using the building.

In closing, a new realty firm has moved onto Main Street, next to Sovereign Bank? What other businesses plan on moving onto Main Street?

By the way, why keep High Street and East Avenue one way? Why not make the streets two way and end the awful Circulator Highway forever?

Neighbors, please confirm or deny these rumors.

Peace,
Jim
