On May 9, 2016, the officers of Newkirk Estates met at Ray Schafferman’s home at 7:30 p.m.  Present were Ray Schafferman, President; Debbie Tarker, Vice-President; Mary Beth Coté, Treasurer; and Directors Brian Coté, Toni James, Bob Rogers, Johanna Fekete, and Mary Zickefoose.  The following is a record of that meeting:

Ray passed out a copy of the By-Laws to each member of the board.  The board will review them and discuss areas that need to be addressed in future meetings.  i.e.  The By-Laws state that dues are $30 per year; that was changed at a meeting but not in the By-Laws.

Our contract with Dennis Hooper for grass mowing has been established.  Therefore a letter needs to be sent to Zachary Long thanking him for his service and informing him of that his services are not needed.

In like manner, a letter will be sent to Donna Long thanking her for her service and requesting the transfer of Newkirk Estates documents to Ray.

In response to the concerns expressed at the May 2nd meeting, the following topics were discussed:

  • ·         A “No Solicitation” sign hung under our entrance sign would cost $75 - $100.  Is it worth it?  Will it reduce solicitation? (More discussion needed.)
  • ·         Do we need our entrance light that we pay for each month?  Can we get Wawa, Popeye’s to contribute to the light or to pay for it?  (Ray will inquire.)
  • ·         Moving of the mailbox at the entrance.  (Rep. Ed Osienski is looking into this.)
  • ·         Large delivery trucks are using our entrance to get in/out of Popeye’s and are driving over our median ruining the lawn and median.  How can we prevent this?  (Ray will inquire.)
  • ·         A couple of speed bumps are needed on Longview Drive and one in front of our parkland.to prevent speeding.  (Ray will inquire about this process.)
  • ·         Mary Beth called in the reported untagged vehicles in the neighborhood.

Since notices for 2016 dues have not been sent out, Mary Beth will do a parcel search for property owners and send those notices as soon as possible.

Debbie Tarker had been getting Newkirk Estates Civic Association minutes copied for the past number of years.  Now that she is retired, she can no longer do that.  Copyworks, a school in the Christina School District, does copying of newsletters for a minimum cost.  For the 140, two-sided minutes, the cost is $0.05 per copy.  We chose to use them for our future copying.

Contact information for each officer and director can be found on our website.  Our state representatives contact information is Rep. Ed Osienski, 302-824-9542, Edward.Osienski@state.de.us; Sen. Karen Peterson, 302-999-7522, Karen.Peterson@state.de.us; Councilman Tim Sheldon, 302-395-8349, TPSheldon@nccde.org.

The next meeting of Newkirk Estates Civic Association will be July 9th a 2 p.m. in our parkland.

Respectfully Submitted,

Mary Beth Coté
