I just wathed CNN. I saw angry men. They just did not know how the US could get into this position. They were angry. How could the truth not have the effect it should have? Red faced. How could this probably happen? I was alarmed. The indignation was raw, righteous and indignant. It cried out for action, almost any, action, to right such an awesome wrong. What great evil had been perpetrated to justify such rage?
As millions around the world worry about their investments, pensions, real estate values, jobs or savings, what situation was this? Was it a slow realization that the loose fiscal politics of neoconservativism (which is a well documented position of that school of ideologues) was responsible for a deficit that was about to plunge the world into economic darkness? Was it an anger with the conservative party that for the last eight years has shaped the economic policy of the USA? Was it a disenchantment with an unfettered capitalism which - with the full support of that party and totally consistent with its values - had rewarded speculators, gangsters and shysters who masqueraded as banking executives, stockbrokers and traders? Was it anger at those who rule us now? Was it a people's indignation that was holding today's leaders to account?
No "my friends" this dire situation was much more serious than that and the anger much more finely focused. What enraged so many in this room, was the prospect that the United States electorate, in a free and open election (that is if we ignore the efforts of the GOP to disenfranchise so many poor and black people), is about to do something which it has done many, many times in its history. The United States is on the brink of electing, through the free choice of its citizens, a President who is the nominated candidate of the Democratic Party of the USA. But despite this, real America was angry. Real America was furious. Real America was outraged as never before. This was a John McCain election rally.
And as we watched it seemed like the USA was about to surrender to an alien, a foreigner, an apostate. The United States was about to cower to a criminal, a terrorist and a man so un-American that the very way of life of the American family would be at stake. The Barbarian, the outsider, the low-life enemy of every decent ordinary citizen, was at the gate. And America, as represented by these angry, angry men, was mad as hell.
This was where John McCain was choosing to spend his time. This is where John McCain is at home. This is where people laugh at his nastiness, his awesome and unashamed contempt for a fellow member of the upper house of the legislature of the United States of America. Here McCain's boorishness is met with whooppees. Here is the anger, the outrage and the seething, blood vessel bursting, red faced, temple straining hatred, on show for all to see. Here is no policy, no argument, no program, no solution, no analysis or no explanation. Barack Hussein Obama is the Devil. That's all you need to know. Barack Hussein Obama is a muslim terrorist loving communist. That's all you need to know. Barack Hussein Obama is the lowest of the low. Pure and simple. That's all you need to know.
No reason. No intellect. This is not the forum where middle America greets John McCain's patronizing inept shmaltz with puzzled silence. This is the forum where McCain and Palin find themselves amongst friends. This is where the hollers and the cheers greet the insults and the smears. This is the base. This is the extreme Right wing in America today.
I understand now. I get it. You can take all your programs . Take all your policies. Take all your substance and argument and reason. Maybe these are as a gong or a tinkling cymbal that signify nothing? It is actually all about character. It is actually all about morality and integrity. It is actually all about courage and steadiness and vision and cool. It is about the defeat of nastiness, shallowness, racism (what else eh?), ignorance, stupidity, blindness, and yes evil.
It is about the election of Barack Hussein Obama to the office of President of the United States of America.
It is all about character.
