I'd think a 1cent increase to corn would be billions.............. Could be wrong.

What corn? So much of the normal corn production will be lost this year that government may well have to make the decision. Available corn= food OR fuel? Lets hope government shows more intelligent than in the past. |

chosen - national corn crop is 12 billion bu x $3 = $36 billion. and i don't even agree that all of the $7/bu corn (or $15/bu soybeans) is due to iowa flooding and wet fields... and $7 corn will not last all year against the entire 12 billion bu corn crop. katrina also affected gas prices in the multi $billions - even before this iraq mess. i saw a reference that 20% of iowa crops my be disrupted - that is a lot, but life goes on. |

i have seen estimates of just the rebuilding costs of katrina at $200- $300 billion. the damage to cedar rapids (where most of the flooding damage has occurred) is currently around $800 million.
Many in Louisa Cty are still trying to get things back to normal from the tornado and now have more to deal with. I don't think at this point it matters if one disaster cost more than another because they are both equally disasterous. AND nedl, I agree with what you said.....the corn needs to be used for more important things than fuel. |
