Pawn shops

Posted in: Muscatine

I was just wanting to know if anyone knows the legalities of obtaining information from a pawn shop.

Here's my problem: an item was stolen from one of my kids. It was sold to a pawn shop. Am I able to go and get the info on who brought in the item from the pawn shop? Or do I have to get the police involved to obtain that information?

P.S. I already called the pawnshop and they gave me the run around.

Call the police and watch that item disappear. The pawn shop would be possession of stolen property, which of course is illegal. This is my understanding of how it works. However the one time I had a pawn buy something stolen from me, I called the police as I was removed from the store and that item was gone by the time the cops showed up.

Peace

In the past I purchased the item that was stolen from me, getting a receipt from the pawn shop.  Walk out the door and call the police reporting that you have recovered the stolen item.  But you MUST be able to prove that you owned the item prior to that date. You must have reported the item stolen when it was discovered stolen.  Then the police have the right to go into the pawn shops records and find out who sold it to the pawn shop.  If the item was reported stolen. and the pawn shop purchased it they did it illegally.  And should go down for it.  The notoriously support petty crimes by not checking its legality.  If it is a chain pawn store and it disappeared off the shelf check their other stores.  Especially across state lines. That is then interstate transport of a stolen item to evade.  Now if the police decide they don't want to push the pawnbroker you can go to the district attorney.  Drop it in his hands it then can become a reelect issue.

If in fact that item is at a pawn shop and you have a way to prove that it is yours and you have filed a report to the police when it was stolen, then you can walk into the pawn shop grab the item off the shelf and tell the guy behind the counter to call the police right now because this is a stolen item and it belongs to you and you are taking it home. You then have to wait for the police to show up, then the people that work at the pawn shop have to give that information of who they took the item from and then once the police check the story and report and all identifiable information then you can go home with your item. You can then press charges on the person who took that item from you.

As most of you know I own a music store and have to know how to handle this since I do take in items on consignment.
