Hm... because that's how our design guy told me to do it?  Probably not the answer you were looking for but he's the artist so I'd have to ask him for specifics.  I think the general idea is for the photos to be enough to easily identify posters you know, without actually taking over the discussion.

Kinda cool that some folks have used photos of themselves and I think it would be nice if the personal profile page had a place for a bigger photo or two for those willing to do so (I'm sticking with my dog, he's better looking than I am).  Don't have a a good idea of when that will happen though.
