Smart Area Growth

Posted in: St Andrews
The recent actions to establish a planned unit development in the area of St Andrews raised questions about smart growth for our area. Smart growth means maximizing shared green space. I think we need to start talking with the county about buying land in our area for public parks. If we don't act now to establish public parks, the land will be lost to dwelling and commercial development. Two areas come to mind off the top of my head. We need to establish the beach area near the water tower as a public park and we need a public walkway between our subdivision and the park. Also, the recent proposal for a PUD proposed establishing acreage between St. Andrews and Pine Hurst a public area. From what I recall, some acreage next to the fire station was also donated by Jim Biddix to the county for a park area. I wonder if that land was ever deeded to the public.

Smart Area Growth Plan

I agree, we the homeowners, should sponsor a plan for parks and open space area in our neighborhood. This beautiful land and natural environment should be protected so that it can be used by all the residents. Some of us that cannot afford to live on waterfront property; however, we would like to enjoy the view and sea breeze. I see that many area's of Jackson Co. are restricted from access because of development. What can we do to start a plan in this area?
Jim Biddix donation

The county property map indicates that the county owns the donated land adjacent to the fire station. Its ID number is 02507030.052 OK, so why has nothing been done with it? I propose a dog park complete with an agility course and possibly a walking track or trail. Let's see what John McKay has to say about his plans for the property.

Draft Smart Growth Petition

The following draft petition has been forwarded to John McKay for comments and suggestions. I would appreciate any comments and suggestions for changes from residents as well:

Smart Growth Petition

We residents of St. Andrews Subdivision, Pinehurst Subdivison, Ocean Beach Estates, and neighboring properties petition the Jackson County Board of Supervisors, particularly Supervisor John McKay, to help us maximize within walking distance of our homes shared green spaces that will improve the quality of our lives.

We also petition for help in promoting and controlling commercial development in order to reduce our dependence on automobiles for necessities and necessary services.

To this end, we ask the Board of Supervisors to establish a Smart Growth commission for the St Andrews-Pinehurst-Ocean Beach area. It should be required that any changes in zoning for the St Andrews-Pinehurst-Ocean Beach area be first approved by the Smart Growth Commission and that the County Planning Department incorporate the commission's plans into its plans for the county.

Sincerely,
Residents of St Andrews, Pinehurst, Ocean Beach Estates, and neighboring properties
