A Brighter Outlook through Healthy Living

Mar 01, 2004

Since the first Health-O-Rama program that was held in 1968, nearly one million individuals have registered to receive the free and low-cost health screening tests and services offered at their annual Projects.

The story of the United Health Organization is the story of people helping themselves and their neighbors to achieve a brighter and healthier future. Historically, the health care system and its resources were focused on the care of illness. Nevertheless, now most health professionals will agree that disease prevention is an essential component of health care delivery. The economic "good sense" of preventive measures versus emergency measures is evident when the cost of treatment for selected preventable conditions is examined.

United Health has as its goal the promotion and support of the awareness of the importance of good health, lifestyle habits and health improvement for our neighbors through the detection of asymptomatic disease, through health education, through the follow-up of significantly abnormal test results and through referral to viable low-cost sources of continued care.

Through the Project, UHO identifies those individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease and cancer and encourages people to take responsibility for their health. Screening tests do not take the place of regular visits to one's health care provider, but we do feel that it is simply "good medicine" to take a screening test so that if a condition is developing, there may be a chance to detect and treat it early.

All Project sites offere the following free basic tests and services:

??x Height & Weight

??x Vision

??x Blood Pressure

??x Health Education Displays and Information

??x Counseling & Referral

The following optional laboratory evaluated screening tests are also offered at all Project sites at a discounted fee:

??x Blood Panel of 22 Profiles

??x Prostate Specific Antigen Blood Test for Men

??x CA-125 Blood Test for Women

??x H.Pylori Blood Test for Stomach Ailments

??x Colorectal Cancer Take-Home Kits

For a discounted fee, United Health Organization will offer a Heart Health program similar to that offered through WC&HP as well as other programs specifically tailored to the needs of each company or group.
