Madison Park Nuisance Violations - absurd waste of tax dollars.

Posted in: Madison Park

When I contacted The Charlotte Observer a few months ago regarding the extraordinary number of nuisance violations in The Madison Park neighborhood, I did so in the spirit of good citizenship. To report something I thought was a waster of our tax dollars. Well President Martin Doss who must be mentally ill, is STILL at it. Roaming the neighborhood reporting little piles of sticks, a car tire an inch into someone's yard or other such nonsense! This morning I had a chance to speak with one of the code inspectors that is duty bound to investigate all such complaints. She was out issuing violations such as the one depicted below. Can't you reason with Martin Doss, I asked. She said the code department had tried - to no avail. So I put it to the neighborhood. Something needs to be done about this. What can be done? This is giving this beautiful neighborhood a terrible reputation. Just going by the number of nuisance violations, I would expect this area to be a SLUM and so would potential home buyers searching on the internet. WOW - this neighborhood gets about 200 violations every week - it must be awful!!!!!!!!! I've heard that Martin Doss is going to resign his presidency - that is a good thing. But will that prevent him driving around to report violators? There are plenty of stupid laws and ordinances. Just because they CAN be enforced does not mean they should be.

Lady please get you facts straight.  Codes did one of their sweeps and it had nothing to do with me.  I did not asked them to do it.

I am not resigning.  I have served 8 - 1 year terms, and will serve out my term as president, and then switch to a director.   That has been my plan for more than 1 year.  Problem has been none of the board members wanted to move up to be president due to the time and work.

If the neighborhood gets 200 violations every week that is news to me.  I certainly am not putting them in.   I have also not seen but a fraction of that number.  Most of the time the same locations.    I am guessing most of those will be in the Montclaire / Starmount area of this NSA if those numbers are correct, and not in Madison Park's foot print.

The rules are pretty simple to follow so I would suggest wherever you live you simple try an follow them, and you will like most find yourself without any problems.   If you were the one in the Observer article I believe you were in Montclaire some place on our border?

I was told there were 62 violations on their sweep recently just this am, and 9 citations were issued for repeats.    That sweep I was told was planned by Jessica the codes officer based on trends weeks ago.     It was more than 25 less violations than we had in May when I knew of the last data that codes annouced at our May HOA meeting.    At that time Codes said they would continue to be proactive, and stay on top of the code issues.

To answer your question.   Putting violations in has nothing to do with being president or not being president. or really the Madison Park HOA.

Seriously this stuff is pretty simple to follow.   Put it out on Tuesday the day prior to pick up , make sure your cans are off the street on Wednesday night after pick up.    Do that an no problem.

Even a child should be able to follow those rules.

So please get your facts straight.   You don't live in Madison Park you live in Montclaire, and until recently I didn't even know where you lived.

It is codes jobs to enforce code violations. That is what they were hired for.  City apparently decided codes was not silly, or a waste of tax payer money.  They have the city divided up and teams work on this stuff every day.

I assure you not a single person would ever send you a notice, fine, or knock on your door if you simply folllowed the rules on the books.  Apparently if Jessica was speaking to you today you still have not got with the program.

Codes has spent a great deal of time working on issues in this neighborhood and other communities.   Without them our communities would look terrible.

Madison Park looks great and it is due in part to citizens being actively involved reporting issues, mainly people following the rules,  and codes being proactive.

I don't think our neighborhood has a bad reputation.  It is more like one that cares about the way it looks, and one where people seem to be desiring to live.  If you have not noticed the houses are selling in just a few days at top dollar.

If you got in trouble for yard waste again then 2 of the calls are yours this year, and if you think it is a waste of time I would suggest YOU stop violating the curb it rules so the city can save the gas in their trucks.   If I am not mistaken it was yard waste you said in the newspaper article that you got in trouble for last spring druing a code sweep.    I thought part of your point in that article was that people didn't know better, and people should be neighborly and educate their neighbors.   Looks like if that is true the education failed in your case.  I have  sent out the rules and posted it.  Thousands have been on our web site so I know our community knows the rules.

I have a limb down in my front yard today.   I will take it out to  the street on Tuesday when it is supposed to go out.

Thanks for sharing you views.....

Mr. Doss,

I've heard people say you have done a lot of good for Madison Park. It's a shame your legacy will be your obvious and irritating obsession with your neigbors' breaking of the rules - rules which are only important to you. I have no interest in continuing a dialog with you - I'll just leave you with this statistic comparing the number of nuisance violators in Madison Park with the number of nuisance violators in Charlotte's worst neighborhood: Hidden Valley. Since the beginning of 2013:

Hidden Valley - 167

Madison Park - 1451

Deanna your facts still don't add up.  You said 200 a week were being reported.  In May the news story stated 1000.  Tell me how do we go June, July, and 20 days of August and only have 451 if there is 200 calls a week?

A huge number of those cases were inspector sweep generated.  Yes, done initially at my request because we had a problem.  It needed to be corrected.  This curb it issue for whatever reason had gotten totally out of hand.   I work with codes on a regular basis to ensure things are addressed.   I also work with many other city departments and officials.

Isn't your yard the one that has those sticks stuck up in the ROW because you don't want anyone getting on your grass making the corner??? I have not seen sticks stuck up against the curb on anyone other corner lots anywhere in the city.   Seems like an excessive method to keep a possible driver, or someone walking off your grass, and probably is an illegal way to mark off your corner.

Have a Blessed Life.   I really mean that. I hold no ill will toward you for your disrespectful post.   You are entitled to your opinions.  They are just totally the opposite from mine.

 Might do you some good!

I don't think Hidden Valley has 2350 homes in it.  More than 3500 if you count the entire dual combined NSA of the Madison Park NSA.  One that goes from E. Woodlawn, Park Road, South Blvd and all the way over to Archdale.   Those first cases involved all the area including Sewlyn Park.    Madison Park was the area I requested the City focus on.  Our Madison Park area has always been so large it is on 2 NSA.  Matter of fact it is really is on 3 because there is a section of MP on the North side of E. Woodlawn.

Frankly, I never had a interest in dialogue with you. I have more than enough with Madison Park residents.  But, I will not allow you to post non facts.   Bet you didn't know your streets speed limit is 25 MPH thanks to me.   Ask your neighbor.   To this day I have your neighbors contacting me asking for help, or how they should handle an issue. Sometimes those are code related.   I have many friends in Montclaire, and we have a handful of paid members in Montclaire.

City rules are city rules regardless of what neighborhood you live in.  I say the ones with the highest calls are the best looking ones.  I have stated that before in city meetings.   I have also worked to get some of these ordinances on the books like parking on lawns, and boarded up structures.  All designed to keep our communities looking great.  The city calls following the rules Being A Good Neighbor!

I said from day one people that get caught not following the "city rules" will be angry at someone.  You should direct that apparent anger of yours at the city if you don't like their rules.   Then you want to credit all the calls to me??  That is laughable.  Yes, I insisted on the city doing their job.  Yes the city is now doing their job.   Give me all the credit!  I want it.  This HOA has more paid members, more people on our private e-mail list, and thousands 9k every single month visiting our web site. All those records surged this year!   We have wonderful partnerships with the business community that allowed us to put on the largest National Night Out in Charlotte.

Your post and your Observer complaint only shed light on the situation, and brought more troops with their eyes open to the street.   I have people telling me all the time Thanks for What You do!   Now people tell me  I took care of this problem on this street,  or that problem if you see it.    The reporter put all the violations and the code in that story to educate people.

Anyway, I will be proud to take credit for ensuring that this community looks its best.  If you read the home page of this web site it says "we are VERY committed to adhering to the codes and ordinances."   What did you think that meant?  I did not write it.

 Seriously, God Bless you.

If you don't have churches find one.  God can do wonders in your life!

Also HiddenValley has issues with crime we all know.  I can't believe you would compare that neighborhood to this one.  I actually had someone tell me NNO night that officials went to that neighbor 1st because they were "afraid to be over their at night!"  That sound like a place you want to live?   I am sure they have people in that community that really care about their community. So I am not dishing them for any efforts they are trying to do.

Your immediate neighbors in Monclaire are paid members of this HOA.   Go figure?? One of my favorite people lives across the street from you.  One on the other corner that house is a paid member, but I think she sold just after she renewed.  She called wanting to know how to get her house in Madison Park when she listed it.

I heard you have only lived in this area for a couple of years.  I assure you what I do, and what we do has been going on since I was involved for more than a decade with this HOA.  Your post does not discourage me in the least from doing my job.

The very 1st post on this discussion page ever is about CURB IT.  Look for yourself, and that was before I ever got involved as the president of Madison Park.

I do feel bad for the inspector(s) that they have to deal with people like you that can't handle being told you can't do something.  They have told me that some of you have been quiet ugly to them.   Wouldn't it be better to just correct and live in peace?  2 days out of 7 having junk / trash / waste on our streets is plenty.   The other 5 we should look great!

I help my neighbors get their stuff off the street all the time, or yes some put their yard waste out correctly on the correct day.   I really don't mind.  One lady down the block has trouble getting her cans out, and off the street.  I told her just call me and I will come and take care of removing them.   The people that really deserve the tickets and fines are the ones that violate the rules every single week.  There are a handful of them still not following the rules.  As for me driving around with pen and paper every week writing all violations down, that makes me laugh again. You can say I have had lots of good laughs off yours and couple of others past post.   Some of these locations have been problems for years and I know their addresses by heart.   I can pretty well predict which locations will be a problem every single week before trash day.  My real view is the majority of the community does the right thing by following the rules.  We should not allow those that can't follow the rules to trash our neighborhood streets.   I didn't write the rules, I don't enforce the rules, but I expect the city to handle the task of enforcement and fines.  I also Thank the many people that do their part to follow the rules every single week.  It is the "little things" that make the difference in where we live,  and fortunately most people get it and respect the law for the good of the “entire community!”
