Seneca/Wedgewood intersection improvement?

Two demerits to me for not posting this sooner:

There has been discussion among the HOA board about doing "something" to the intersection of Seneca Place/W. Wedgewood (next to Pinewood) to make the intersection smaller and help slow traffic down.  CDOT is willing to help, but they have said there is not, and will not be, a project here unless there is clear support from the neighborhood to do so.  [Disclaimer -- I work for CDOT but this would not be my project due to the obvious conflict of interest, and I would not expect CDOT to treat Madison Park any differently than they would any other neighborhood.]  If there is a project, we the neighborhood would need to define what objective(s) we're trying to achieve.  CDOT would then develop a concept that achieves that objective(s).  As I recall, the HOA still has about $1300 or so (Marty correct me if I'm wrong) in our traffic calmign account.  Those funds could be used toward the project, although it would be more of a showing of good faith and neighborhood support to CDOT, since $1300 will not go very far for construction.

I think that this would be a good opportunity to do the following (in no particular order):

1. Eliminate the sweeping right turn from northbound Wedgewood to eastbound Seneca.  This would make the intersection more of a standard 4-leg intersection in which would make it easier for pedestrians and more obvious to drivers.

2. Improve the sight distance for southbound Wedgewood approaching Seneca (you can't see what's coming from Pinewood down the hill).

3. Put something more substantial in Seneca Place than speed humps to slow down traffic going down the hill through the S-curve.

I personally detest speed humps for several reasons and have no interest in seeing more of them.  4-way stops are only marginally less intolerable.  Neither would be effective in achieving the goals I've listed.

So I'll open the discussion with some thought questions:

1. I think something needs to be done to improve the intersection.  Do you agree or disagree, and why?

2. If you think something needs to be done, did I list the correct goals?  Should there be more?  Should there be less?

I'm willing to take the lead on this and have the intersection improved, but like I said, it will take clear neighborhood support to do so.  Please let me know what you think.

1253.49 to be exact in that traffic calming account

Do you know what the traffic counts are for Seneca Place?   I know someone suggested all stops already after this came up last month in the minutes.  I didn't think about this at the time...but Farmbrook Drive has all speed humps.   Residents at one time were wanting to add a couple of all stops on Farmbrooks.  They were not able to do it.   Current policy at CDOT allows humps to be added between 1000 and 2500 if all stops are up and there is still speeding, but not in reverse.    CDOT did add one more hump down toward Wensley and that did help calm traffic.

I think the worse thing about this intersection is coming down Wedgewood with the school off to your right.   You are correct it is hard to see what is coming down Seneca Place from the direction of the school.

I would like to know how busy that street is currently.  I know it has to be at least 1000 for it to get the humps years ago.  I am sure it is a lot of traffic.

I know one time I saw plans for that road to connect with Old Pineville.  I am not sure what the point of doing that would be ..but this was on the plans I saw a few years ago.   Might of been transit area plans I saw this on.   Is this still a possibility?

We have had little feedback since we mentioned this on our open discussion in last months meeting minutes.   Over 600 minutes were sent out or opened on-line and over 6000 people have visisted our web site this month.   So do let us hear some feedback.
