Great Harvest Bread Company- Animal Kneads Day to benefit

Animal Care & Control’s Community Spay/Neuter Fund

Sunday August 21, 2011 10:00am- 5:00pm

August 17, 2011 - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Care & Control is excited to participate in The Great Harvest Bread Company’s 5th Annual Animal Kneads Day Fundraiser which takes place Sunday, August 21, from 10AM to 5PM at the Great Harvest Bread Company located at 6420 Rea Road in Charlotte. (Located in the Shops at Piper Glen.)

Once again Animal Care & Control’s Public Spay/Neuter Fund which provides free Spay & Neuter surgeries to Mecklenburg County pets will be the beneficiary of this fundraiser.

The Animal Kneads Day event is held by The Great Harvest Bread Company and has tripled in size since it first began in 2007.

On Sunday, August 21, The Great Harvest Bread Company will open on a Sunday, which is not a regular business day, and the owners and staff will donate their time and the ingredients to make hundreds of loaves of bread.

Volunteers from Animal Care & Control will staff the counter and offer the bread to customers for a donation of $10 a loaf. 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to the Animal Care & Control Public Spay & Neuter Fund.

In 2010, Animal Kneads Day brought in nearly $9,200, This year’s fundraising goal is $15,000.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg is one of the top 10 fastest-growing US metro areas, and as the Charlotte area continues to grow, so does the animal population. There are an estimated 400,000 cats and dogs living in the metro area, and many of these animals are stray. As a municipal shelter, Animal Care & Control cannot turn away any animal, regardless of the shelter's capacity. To help reduce the number of animals coming into the shelter, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Animal Care & Control Division instituted a Free Public Spay & Neuter Assistance Program. This program is funded solely through donations and grants, which makes Animal Kneads Day our most important annual fundraiser. In FY11, the spay/neuter program was able to sterilize over 1,000 animals, thanks to generous donations by private citizens and grant partnerships with the Humane Society of Charlotte.
