Rezoning for schools

I haven't heard anything about rezoning our neighborhood for better schools?  Where does that stand?  TO me, the best way to make our neighborhood desirable is to work toward getting out of harding high school.  For sheer distance alone as well as poor performance.

thanks

There is a mention on the subject in the minutes last month.  Director Jarrett Hunt had many meeting with CMS Board members.  Our desire to change to Myers Park or South Meck was all but lost in all the drama of school closings and budget cuts.   Then throw in the last minute switch to Harding.   School officials pretty much said it was not happening this year.   They encourage us to support Pinewood (which many neighbors are doing)  that it possibly could happen at a future date.  Not the immediate future.

Jarrett and his group that started the movement plan to take a break and then approach CMS again in the not so distant future.

If you are not working with them I am sure they would love the help!

On a side note I think our neighborhood is desirable now.  Just perhaps not for families with children of school age.    Hopefully one day that will change!  I have found working on other issues that sometimes it takes hammering the same message over and over before someone finally listens!   I have worked on issues that have taken 7 or 8 years to get them changed for this neighborhood.   Sometimes it changed only because leaders first approached have moved on and someone with a change of heart or that can see it your way takes over.

Hey- thanks for the note. I actually reached out to our superintendent this past week and CMS is heavily involved with their budget issues, so rezoning has not been a recent issue. You are absolutely right in that Harding doesn't make sense for us, and the rezoning will continue to be a focus for us as a neighborhood. Once the budget is finalized, I will start pushing on rezoning again. In the meantime, I encourage you to check out Pinewood Elementary. It's a great school and several neighbors volunteer their regularly. The one goal, which is controllable by us, is to make Pinewood a neighborhood school. Thanks again.

Hi Jarrett,   Has it been mentioned about trying to rezone us for AG middle instead of Sedgefield?  This is the next problem I will face when it is time for my Kindergartner who attends Beverly Woods to go to middle school.  As of now, since Sedgefield is still a Title 1 school our kids are eligible to get into a non-title 1 "home" middle school by No Child Left Behind.  (ex: Carmel, AG).  Quite a few number of kids who live in Madison Park go to either Carmel or AG.   I along with many other families in our neighborhood were able to get our children into other "home" elementary schools because Pinewood was/is title 1.  I hope Pinewood will eventually lose that title 1 status...
