ALERT! Beware of Security Company

Posted in: Madison Park

I was alerted today that a security company or at least someone claiming to work for one has been in our area knocking on doors offering to install free security systems.  Apparently they are even stating the Neighborhood Association is endorsing them and that they are speaking at our Feb. 2010 meeting.  This is simply not true.  If you are approached by such people, or anyone else suspicious please call 911 and report.  CMPD can at least find out who they are, and what they really are doing perhaps.

It is my understanding that a similar problem occurred on the East side of town in recent days.

I notified the entire division to watch for these people.  If you get any kind of description let me know.  Also, do they have a car?

If anyone has any other details, or have seen these people going door to door please feel free to share directly with Sergeant Hulsey at jhulsey@cmpd.org or send and e-mail to our Madisonparkhoa@hotmail.com e-mail account and we will forward for you.

Please share this information with you neighbors:

There have been recent reports of supposed alarm system door-to-door salesmen in residential neighborhoods.  Some of the neighbors in Madison Park alerted the H.O.A. and me of this a few days ago.  Since that time I have e-mailed the division officers to watch for this and I am receiving responses of this occurring in other areas as well.  One of our officers sent me the message pasted below today:

I just talked to someone who lives over on Richard off of West Tyvola.  She had some individuals come to the door doing the same thing yesterday.  After the guys left the person called ADT who said they didn't have anyone that worked for them matching the description.  ADT also said that all of their employees have a photo badge which they wear when they are out.  The individuals also asked if the neighbors had a security system as well.  Here is their description: 2 black males late 20’s early 30’s carrying ADT SIGNS, one had an orange jacket and long dreads. Old ADT shirts. Neither appeared to be "professional looking."

Whoever the individuals were in Madison Park they told a neighbor they were endorsed by the homeowner’s association.  According to the HOA president this is not true.  If anyone comes to your door offering to sell or install an alarm please don’t tell them you currently don’t have an alarm.  They may be casing homes to see who does not have an alarm system.  Don’t provide them any information regarding your neighbor’s home either.  I would suggest minimizing any conversation with any solicitor.  If you see through a window or peep hole any individuals possibly posing as alarm system representatives I recommend announcing through the closed door that you are busy.  This will alert the subjects that the house is occupied.

If you see any of these alleged alarm salesmen going door-to-door please call 911.  We need to identify these individuals.

Thank you…

CMPD just alerted us to this info on the door to door activity:

We are hearing similar reports wherein the solicitors are using “scare tactics” and misleading people to believe there is rampant crime in the area.  Almost all reports have described the solicitors as not looking legitimate or wearing unprofessional attire.

From all the information we’ve gathered it appears there is someone from an authorized dealer of ADT products who is sending out these solicitors.  We haven’t been able to pin down what business they are form.  The local ADT company stated they have had complaints too, but no one could give them a name of a solicitor or a business they worked for.  ADT stated they have numerous authorized dealers in the area.  Someone is hiring “less than professional” people to go out and solicit so I am recommending neighbors to continue to be on alert for these people and provide them very little personal information regarding you or your home.

In general, there is no law against door-to-door solicitations, but if you ever feel like a solicitor is not legitimate or being to aggressive with their sales tactics don’t hesitate to call 911.  We will gladly try and locate and identify the individual.
