RAIN AND WARM WEATHER PROMPTS REMINDER OF MOSQUITO PREVENTION TIPS

Charlotte, NC - Although mosquito season has not officially begun, the Mecklenburg County Health Department reminds residents that simple prevention can curb mosquitoes in the area.

"With spring temperatures steadily rising and spring rains increasing, we want to remind people about ways that they can protect themselves against mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, said Dennis Salmen, manager of the Health Department's pest management program. "We expect that this will be a moderate mosquito season and that West Nile virus incidence will increase from last year's very low activity."

Environmental health professionals recommend that homeowners utilize mosquito breeding prevention strategies by eliminating standing water sources that may be potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Whether its removing buckets, cleaning out gutters, or keeping drain ways (e.g. backyard ditches) clean of debris and vegetation- don't let water stand or stagnate.

In addition, the best personal protection against West Nile and other mosquito-borne illnesses is to prevent mosquito bites. To do so:

- Keep window and door screens closed, in good repair, and "bug tight."

- Stay inside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

- Use repellants containing DEET and follow directions closely.

- Wear long sleeves and long pants when outdoors.
