Police warn of utility scam burglars
Milwaukee police on Thursday warned that three men posing as utility workers have targeted older residents this week by claiming that they needed to check frozen water pipes as a ruse to enter and burglarize homes.
Two women, ages 83 and 91, allowed the men into their homes Wednesday after they claimed to be employees from Milwaukee Water Works, according to District 3 Community Liaison Officer Thomas Kupsik. They were not injured.
The first case occurred about 10:45 a.m. near S. Howell and W. Lincoln Ave. on the city's south side. One man took the victim into the kitchen while two others stole items from her home. She realized what had happened only after they left, then contacted police.
In the second case, a woman at a home near N. 58th St. and W. St. Paul Ave. was in the basement with one of the men about 12:45 p.m. and became suspicious when she heard the others going through her house upstairs. She asked for identification and the men left, Kupsik said.
The time to ask for identification, however, is before allowing any type of utility or other worker into a home, Kupsik said. Anyone with legitimate business will not mind waiting while a homeowner verifies identification, he said.
Milwaukee Water Works Superintendent Carrie Lewis said all employees wear identification badges. She said anyone attempting to identify an employee's identification with the department may call 414-286-2830.
