In May of 1999 I watched my crazy dreams of a life in the Barrio slip away. I had recently agreed to purchase a property with two houses in Barrio Anita. Fire struck first and the damaged property was taken off the market.
This proved to be providence as two weeks later the house at 207 Roger Rd. came on the market. As my realtor and I approached the house we could see the care which the land and house had once known. Now, though, the energy of love which once flowed here had stopped. Weeds were growing amongst the rocks and the floor had not been vacuumed for many weeks.
Still the house was hardy and strong. The kitchen was new and the light in the large living room full and bright. A house full of potential and character and spice with a three headed shower and a unique Ramada which started life as a corn crib bought from the Sears Farm Catalog. It was a place my cats would love and where I could see myself opening my life to greater possibilities.
We shook hands with the caretaker after our tour and with hardly a word headed knowingly to my realtors to write up an offer. Three weeks later I was moving in.
This is how I came the Limberlost Neighborhood. My name is Laurence P Taoman and I have volunteered to be the editor of this the Limberlost Neighborhood Association Newsletter. I see this paper as a conduit of ideas, greetings, stories and desires. It can be a report card of what we have done and an idea generator of what we will do.
I do not see it as a paper of my words but of yours. So, please, send me your words.
How did you come to call this neighborhood home? What stories you have to tell? What are your visions? What does a neighborhood mean to you?
As a Neighborhood Association we can make a difference and your words, thoughts and energies will make that difference. Come to the meetings and meet your neighbors. Become involved and make a difference. We can become a flame, which cannot be ignored by the city, by the county, but most importantly of all, by each one of ourselves.
