We’re excited to bring you this spring edition of Wildlife Online. As the weather becomes warmer, folks are tending to their gardens and lawns. With “No-Mow May” approaching, read how you can easily replace your lawn with native species and make a lasting impact for wildlife.

Grow Beyond No Mow May: Options for Reducing Your Lawn

No-Mow May is a trend that has been gaining steam among gardeners, encouraging those with lawn space to opt for low or no-mowing practices throughout the month. Unfortunately, most lawns are comprised only of non-native turf grasses which provide very little benefit to wildlife. To really make an impact, we recommend focusing on growing native species instead of lawns.

With natural carbon sinks like forests and oceans overwhelmed, excess emissions have built up in the atmosphere and are warming the planet. To combat climate change, we’ll need to use every solution at our disposal. One that the U.S. has invested billions in is Direct Air Capture (DAC). Charting the Way Forward on Climate

When thinking about all the change that needs to happen in order to have a clean, carbon-free transportation system and economy, it can be hard to imagine just what that might look like. The growing ubiquity of solar panels on rooftops, wind turbines on hilltops or in open fields, and electric cars on the road helps introduce us to aspects of that future. But these just scratch the surface of the transformation that needs to happen to truly reduce emissions and stop the pollution that is overheating our planet.

The Solar Eclipse and Wildlife

Were you lucky enough to catch the eclipse earlier this month? Eclipses, one of nature’s most unusual and dramatic phenomena, have well-documented effects on animal behavior. For example: a 2017 study at a South Carolina zoo—located in the path of totality of an eclipse that year—found that 75 percent of observed animals changed their behavior during the event.
