Summer Pride Award Winner

The Lantern Village Association presents the winners of the Summer 2001 Pride Awards. These awards seek to identify and recognize property owners and residents who have significantly and creatively enhanced the Lantern Village neighborhood. Recipients are acknowledged for demonstrating their “pride of ownership” and adding value to their property, the Lantern Village, and the city of Dana Point.

33775 Silver Lantern

Built in 1949, artist Irene Reva bought this home in 1969. Although it burned down in 1972 and she’s remodeled it several times since, Irene has always kept the original floor plan of the charming three-bedroom house she fell in love with. Built by Mr. Rassey and his writer wife, it was among the first homes on Silver Lantern. A photo from 1948 shows the house under construction, with nothing else around it except a utility pole, “And it’s still there!” exclaims Irene. It’s apparent there is an artist-in-residence at this address. Creative touches on the exterior of the house include an antique mailbox Irene salvaged from a riverbed in Laguna Canyon. Inside, floors are covered with fine rugs from around the world. Paintings, masks, and other artworks adorn every wall and tabletop. “When you’re an artist and you see crafts in other places, you have to get some,” says Irene. Her own gorgeous stained glass works fill the windows and doors. A striking mosaic that she and her family did themselves covers the floor of an ocean-view deck off the master bedroom. Inspired by a roll-top desk, Irene had the ceiling of her studio done in wood slats that curve into the walls. The entire home is truly a work of art and a continually evolving labor of love. Irene is also a Lantern Village property owner with a three-unit building on La Serena that she’s owned since the late 70’s. She remarks, “Tenants are much better these days.”
