Neighborhood Spotlight - The Lakewood Canals

Just south of Park Row Drive off of Bowen Road near the Town of Pantego lies a "little bit of Venice, Italy."

The residents of Lakewood Canals enjoy swimming, fishing and non-motorized boating on the private waterways. This Arlington neighborhood has an impressive ecosystem. Blue Herons, cranes, turtles, various fish and even a peacock call Lakewood Canals home. The residents here are discouraged from feeding the birds and ducks. But every now and then, bird lovers have been known to entice the animals with goodies just to get a closer look at the feathered creatures.

The development of lakewood Canals began in 1968. Today, 132 lots wind around 11 acres of canals.

According to Cindy Yandell, president of the Lakewood homeowner’s Association, this neighborhood has a no-obstruc-tion ordinance that allows every neighbor the best possible view of the water. Because of this ordinance, no privacy fences are allowed and crime is low.

On May 2, Lakewood Canals unveiled its new decorative street signs thanks to a new program administered by the City of Arlington as part of its effort to foster livable neighborhoods. The Sign Topper identification Program promotes neighborhood identity. For more information, call 817-459-6251.
