Health and Wellness Community Festival

Russell Community Festival 2009

LAMP has sponsored eight community festivals over the last four years. This is the first event of the year and the turnout was great. The numbers of participants are increasing with each event. There were approximately 100 people served during this event and new relationships were developed.

The event was planned to raise awareness about the health issues that exist within our communities and offer some solutions and resources that are available to address those issues.

The day started with two inflatable bouncers for the children to enjoy and one of the bouncers was a water slide. I believe that was the hit of the day for the kids. The Police Mounting Unit was there with Lance, the horse. The Fire Department came with the fire truck and ladder reaching to the heavens. Our entertainment included DJ Ken Mason spinning the sounds. and the Everserve Dancers, seniors line dancing. There were representatives from JCYC and they brought some of their youth who participated in some of the activities. We had basketball for those basketball fans, football throw, bouncing balls, little balls, games, and giveaways.

Some of the organizations represented were C.A.R.R., the Russell Neighborhood Association, Unicorn, providing Aids Testing, The Health Center, Passport, The Urban League, and Metro United Way Youth Venture. New Roots partnered with LAMP and we provided Fresh Fruit and Vegetables at below cost. Ms. Lucille Leggett was present representing The Russell Garden. We had entrepreneurs selling clothes, and youth selling jewelry and showing their artwork. We had Nesa’s Nails doing free manicures, Chef Jason on the grill and LAMP'S President, Jimmy Williamson and youth leader, Tyea serving the food. We had something for everyone to enjoy. There were about 20 volunteers who helped with the set up, and clean up throughout the day.

Much thanks to our volunteers, supporters, donors, Center for Neighborhoods, Metro United Way, Metro Councilpersons from District 1 Judith Green, District 2 Barbara Shanklin, District 4 David Tandy, District 5 Cheri Bryant-Hamilton, District 9 Tina Ward-Pugh, and District 10 Jim King.

It was a magnificent day!
