Folks,

I'm sure you guys have received your tax bill by now and notice a big increase in your tax bill.  The city council had approved a big increase this year for class 1 property homes (1, 2, 3 family homes).

http://council.nyc.gov/html/budget/PDFs/FY12%20Adjusted%20Base%20Proportion%2011-3-11.PDF

if you see the tax rate from the chart, it's outrageous, also they are doing it in a bad economic time with depressing home prices and foreclosures.  This really shows how the city council and mayor is out of touch with the "normal" new yorker.

tag this along with the tax increase for my R2 to R2A zoning changed, i'm looking at a tax bill increase of more than 10%+

If you are a senior citizen, disabled or a veteran you might be qualified to get a large real estate tax exemption. Check out the Department of Finance web site   at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dof/html/property/property_owners.shtml.

Be glad that you are in an R2 or R2A zone because you are protected from many things that can affect your quality of life and at the same time enhance the value of your home (assuming that you are not looking for a big profit from a developer that doesn't care about those living in this community).

Regardless of the agreeable high tax rate here in NYC, Nassau County and many other counties in NYS have even higher tax rates.

Again, check out the DOF site to see if you qualify for any tax exemptions,

except that in Nassau County and other counties in NYS doesn't need to pay City Income Tax.
