SAVE THE TRAIL!

The life of the Crescent Trail is being jeopardized!!!

Ike Leggett, our county executive, is holding a series of meetings for the public to express its concerns/desires for the upcoming budget (facing a $400 million revenue shortfall).

SEND AN EMAIL, SAVE THE TRAIL!!!

Dear Friends of the Trail and Park,

This is it! This is the time to begin our letter writing CAMPAIGN to Save the Trail, because:
1) During January, the Navy and the Governor are soliciting comments on BRAC --the Base Relocation of Walter Reed Hospital to the Naval Hospital in Bethesda (which renders a Metro Purple Line Loop along the Beltway between Silver Spring and Bethesda Medical Center to be a more needed transit plan than a light rail along the trail); and
2) This Thursday, the Planning Board is voting on their staff's "Purple Line Functional Master Plan Purpose & Outreach Report", which fails to consider alternatives that would either tunnel the Purple Line between Bethesda and Silver Spring or pu t the Purple Line along the Beltway, such as the Metro Loop plan.

Please send an email NOW to all the addresses below.
You can use and/or modify the Sample Email below. Original emails are always best, but every email is counted. Every email helps!

We need and appreciate emails from ALL of you.
This especially includes trail users from Virginia, Baltimore, Burtonsville, Gaithersburg, Potomac, Takoma Park, Rockville, Silver Spring, and MORE. We want to show how widely this Trail is really used.

Also, please ask THREE friends, colleagues, neighbors, family members, etc. to also send emails.
We need to send an OVERWHELMING number of emails!

SAMPLE EMAIL:
RE: BRAC and the Metro Line Loop

Dear Governor, Lieutenant Governor, County Executive, Chairman, and Officer in charge of BRAC,

With the coming of Walter Reed Hospital to Bethesda and surging growth at NIH, I urge you to study the Metro Purple Line Loop -- a Metrorail line that would run along the Beltway and connect Bethesda Medical Center directly with Silver Spring.

This Metro Purple Line Loop would be superior to a light rail Purple Line along the Capital Crescent Trail. In addition to saving the Trail, the Metro Loop would: 1) better address BRAC and NIH growth, and provide superior long term transportation solutions for the Region; 2) seamlessly connect the two legs of the Red Line with Metro rail and provide faster and improve d Metro service; 3) relieve Metro congestion at downtown DC stations such as Judiciary Square and Metro Center by routing commuters through the Loop rather than downtown stations; 4) enhance homeland security and improve Metro's ability to respond to emergencies by providing an alternate route for Red Line trains; and 4) allow for growth and expansion, especially with the possibility of future connections to Rock Spring Park, Montgomery Mall, Virginia and White Oak. The Metro Loop plan would not preclude any plans for transit east of Silver Spring, which could be bus, light rail, or heavy rail.

More than ten thousand hikers and bikers have signed petitions opposing a light rail Purple Line that would destroy thousands of trees and run trains just 10' from the Capital Crescent Trail.
We need more trees and natural trails - not fewer. Please preserve our beautiful Trail, and plan to put the Purple Line either underground or in another location, such as the Purple Line Loop.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
