Scary stuff! On Nov. 17 the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office gave a two-hour Cyber Safety Seminar at BTMS.

Did you know?

Predators are online lurking for information about you and/or your children. They can access computers, gain access to webcams, view photos, videos, and stalk our children online. Predators can then show up at their home, school, work, extracurricular activities, church, events, etc. to abduct, sexually molest, torture, and/or murder you.

The presentation was graphic, difficult to watch, but real. Children, now adults, spoke about their horrific online experiences (the ones that survived). One woman was abducted at work and held captive for four days before being rescued by the FBI.

Predators have no stereotype, no specific social status, income level, or employment preference. Many are doctors, lawyers, teachers, coaches, clergymen, or even your neighbor. Once they gain our children's trust OR find an "opportunity," they will not hesitate.

Do you monitor your children's online activity?

Please be careful and responsible when you are online. Know what social networking sites your children are accessing, what they say, all their so-called "friends," and monitor what information they are posting. Including all websites, social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, Bebo, Friendster, Pandora), BBS, chats, IM, texting, sexting, email, and gaming consoles with Internet access. Please remember that any information submitted in a discussion forum, message board or other such area will be deemed public information and is not confidential.

ComputerCop software was given FREE to help parents monitor their children’s’ online activities. ALL 7th grade students in Flagler County Public Schools will be shown this seminar and it may be offered again to parents this 2010-11 school year. For further details, contact your child's school or the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office at 386-437-4116 or www.myfcso.us.
