Hoskins Community

Hoskins Community is a partnership of several inter-city neighborhoods that are bound together with a common purpose, to provide a better life for our residents. Our program is based on a five-point initiative, education. health, economic development, culture and the environment. These initiatives will strengthen and revitalize the community that might otherwise fall farther into decline. We aim to tackle illiteracy, unemployment, crime, health, indifference and other issues that effect our community.

The community has a highly diverse population, over a third of the residents have resided in their homes over thirty years. The income level is low. A third of the households fall below the poverty threshold.

An organized and working community is a vital link to a successful society. A community must be strong in order to survive; it must be functioning. We must build a better community to help keep our city strong.
Hoskins is a historic landmark in the city of Charlotte. In 1901 Hoskins Mill opened. It was built by J.A. Jones, the mill was one of the main sources of income in the community. Hoskins was a low to moderate mill town. Today, the mill is a low income apartment complex.

Our goal is to empower the residents to lead independent lives. We would like to encourage community growth by supporting programs that are fundamental to the stability and prosperity of the community. Programs that would foster self-esteem and community pride.
In the last five years we have made progress towards reviving the community. Our first initiative was to address the immediate needs food, shelter and clothing. A food bank of breads, meats, vegetables and can goods are issued to residents that are in need of items. Deliveries are made to residents that need to receive a bag of food but are not able to pick up. During the winter months Sunday Dinner is served to anyone that is in need. Thanksgiving meals are prepared and turkeys are given away. Christmas sponsorship is given for twenty five families, including toys, shoes, clothing and food. We have a winter coat and apparel drive for the area's schools.

We offer programs in after school tutorials, computer skills, theatrical classes, summer camp, educational field trips, reading and writing skills. Senior citizens enjoy the Dorothy Harris Center that offers sewing, gardening, field trips and therapeutic exercises. They are looking toward to having ceramic classes in the future.

Our informational referral service offers contacts, phone numbers, names and agencies that will assist residents with concerns and problems.

Our new adventure to help bring about economic development is training in life skills and Hoskins Catering Service. A community based and operate catering service that brings employment, self-esteem, pride and encouragement. Proceeds are channel back into the community with 10% going towards a Community Health Care Center which we are currently seeking funds. A summer bazaar is also planned to generate revenue for this purpose.

Mission: To protect, preserve and improve life in the community by strengthening and mobilizing the community, to reach out and provide programs that are beneficial to our community.
