Hayhurst

4-8-03 Meeting Minutes

Crime Report

Senior Neighborhood Officer Scott Westerman reported 16 incidents in March, almost all adjacent to Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway (BHH). There have been problems in and around the Southwest Community Center on Friday nights with unsupervised teens. A task force with representatives from the Parks department and the Police department is
working on several solutions. The task force is also addressing the
practice of pedestrians crossing mid-block from the community center to the shopping area. For their own safety, pedestrians should always cross at the light at the corner. You may contact Officer Westerman at
westerman@police.ci.portland.or.us.

Committee Reports

Land Use:
Ruth Burnett presented her pre-application to divide her lot at 4535 SW Cullen Blvd.

Parks and Environment:
Joe Higgins and Chris Raydon-Feeney continue their work on developing a common survey to assess the use of school property by neighbors. Joe reported that West Portland Park Neighborhood Association and the Trust for Public Lands have an option to purchase the Holly Farm site, south of the Capitol Hill Library, for use as a public park. WPPNA is seeking $10 pledges to show support for the acquisition. Email Amanda Fritz with your pledge fritzamand@aol.com.

Transportation:
We are still working with PDOT to build pedestrian crossings on BHH. However, due to the number and placement of driveways on BHH, we may get only one crossing. We will have more information in May.

SWNI:
SWNI asked the neighborhood associations to comment on which citywide
topics we would like to see addressed in a public forum. Given these
choices to rank, 1) the fate of PGE, 2) baseball, 3) Bull Run ownership, 4) capping the reservoirs, we decided we would like to see the PGE and reservoir issues addressed in a public forum. If you have additions to this list or would like to volunteer to put forums together, please email Lillie Fitzpatrick, lf@pdx.edu.

Fun:
An evening neighborhood National Night Out picnic is scheduled for
August 5. Pendleton Park is already reserved for this fun event. It will be a dessert potluck. We are seeking donations of goodies for the kids, ideas for activities, and volunteers to help with the planning. Please contact Shannon Kelly at skelly@chnw.org.

Planning for 2003/2004:
HNA participated in several neighborhood projects this past year. We hosted a National Night Out picnic on a beautiful August evening. The picnic brought together over 100 Hayhurst neighbors for a dessert potluck, bicycle parade and a safety-themed raffle. Members of the Police and Fire Departments were there, as were city employees and FBI agents.

Volunteers helped clean up the landscaping in front of Hayhurst Elementary. We hope to collaborate with Hayhurst on more projects this year such as Safe Routes to School (see related article). Volunteers also spread gravel on the footpath between SW Idaho and Vermont Streets. Footpaths such as this one help to make our neighborhood more pedestrian and bike friendly. We are seeking volunteers to help spread gravel on additional paths this summer.

HNA Members have served on SW and citywide committees addressing such issues as dog off-leash areas and traffic safety. The Association continues to monitor land use and parks issues, with a special emphasis on the water runoff and stream health problems.

Next HNA Meeting

Tuesday, May 13, 2003 from 7 to 8:30 pm at Vermont Hills United Methodist Church, 6053 SW 55th. This will be our last meeting before the summer hiatus, so please come to air your concerns. Our meetings are informal and open to all residents and business owners in the Hayhurst Neighborhood. We encourage anyone who is interested in neighborhood issues to attend.
